3 PGI doctors get NAMS fellowship
Chandigarh, October 30 The honoured doctors include Professor Amod Gupta, Head, Department of Ophthalmology, Professor Deepak Bhasin, Department of Gastroenterology and Professor Arunaloke Chakrabarti, Department of Medical Microbiology. Dr Amod Gupta a leading clinician and research scientist of international repute in the field of retina and uveitis with significant original contribution in the field of diabetic retionopathy, tuberculosis of the eye and endopathalmitis. Dr Gupta who has 194 publications to his credit is founder President of Uveitis Society of India. He remained president of Viteoretinal Society of India also. Dr Gupta is the recipient of Dr R.N.Mathur Award and A.W.Sherrit Memorial Award also. Professor Deepak Bhasin has also made significant contributions towards growth and development of gastroenterology in India. Through his research Dr Bhasin has extensively contributed to the areas of Helicobacter pylori, gastrointestinal endoscopy and pancreatic diseases. With publication of 183 papers in international and national journals the gastroenterologist has been honoured with Parke Davis oration, Olympus Mitra award for endoscopy by Indian Society of Gastroenterology and Sisco Pentax oration by Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India. On the international editorial board of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, on the global faculty of Gastrohep.com Dr Bhasin is on the education committee of World Organization of Gastroenterology. He is one of the few Indian gastroenterologists who have the distinction of regularly writing reviews for Endoscopy, Endoscopy Around the World section of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and editorials for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Journal of Pancreas. His research work has been cited in various reputed textbooks of Gastroenterology. He has been a visiting professor at renowned universities including Yale, Cleveland in USA and Perth
in Australia. Similarly Professor Chakrabarti with particular emphasis on epidemiology and serodiagnaosis of fungal infections specially Sporotrichiosis and Cryptococcosis has upgraded his laboratory as Reference Centre and helped various institutions in the identification of fungi as well as establishing newer techniques in the diagnosis of mycotic diseases. He has collaborated in the identification of Penicillium marneffei focus in Manipur and Sporotrichosis in Karnataka and built the country's largest repository of medically important fungi. |

Pharma conference from tomorrow
Mohali, October 30 This was stated by P. Rama Rao, director, NIPER, at a press conference here today. He said the three-day conference would bring in a great confluence of pharmacologists and allied drug discovery scientists from all over the country and also from the US, Canada, UK, New Zealand and Germany. Nearly 1,000 pharmacological intellectuals, academicians and scientists, spearheading the pharmacological education, were expected to participate. The participants would not only exchange ideas but also deliberate on scientific strategies in an effort to keep up with the paradigm shift in drug discovery and development occurring in this millennium. India, with its unique advantages, was going to be the hub of pharmaceutical research and development and clinical trials in the coming years. Good clinical practices in clinical trials and research would help India to earn more than $200 million in the next two to three years. |
Haryana emerge T20 champs
Chandigarh, October 30 Put in to bat by the ATC, Haryana openers Rahul Sharma (24, 4x4s) and Aneesh Jain (28, 5x4s) gave a solid start to the team. Dharminder scored a fine knock of 56 runs, studded with five fours and two sixes. Haryana posted 191 for 8 in 20 overs. Kunal and Rohit claimed three and two wickets, respectively, for the ATC. Chasing 192 to win, the ATC suffered an early jolt when opener Devrath (0) was caught by Dharminder off the bowling of Sunil (1 for 34) with the scoreboard reading 1. The other opener, Gaurav Tandon (28), departed at the score of 38. The ATC lost wickets at regular intervals. Harpreet and Rhonit showed some resistance with knocks of 49 and 31, respectively. The ATC could muster only 158 for 8 in the stipulated overs. Chandigarh Sports Director I.S. Sandhu handed over the prizes. Indo-Pak Tie
Mohali, October 30 Reviewing the elaborate security arrangements for the match at the stadium here today, R.S. Khatra, SSP, Mohali, said though there was no specific intelligence input regarding any security threat during the match, the police was not taking any chances. “Since this is an international event which involves India and Pakistan, any disruption caused can have international ramifications,” he said. As many as 250 Pakistani nationals are expected to be present for the match. “An SP level officer would be in-charge of the foreign registration cell. This time we are not allowing any extension in visa,” said the SSP, adding that they had also asked for the list of the six Pakistanis who had gone missing during the last India-Pakistan match held at Mohali. Almost the entire police force of the district will be on duty that day at the stadium. Another 400 private security men will be deployed by the stadium authorities. The district police will follow the security plan laid out by Naunihal Singh, former SSP, Mohali, during the ICC Champions’ Trophy matches held here. Spectators will be going through a three-tier security ring before reaching their seats and the residents of the township can expect the traffic flow to be diverted from outside the stadium from November 6 onwards when the two teams reach the city for practice sessions.

Chandigarh, October 30 Suraj Beniwal of Haryana beat Anupam Chhetri 6-0, 6-3 to move into the quarter-final round. Ajay Yadav went down fighting to third seed Aashman Goghari. Goghari toiled to win the match 7-6 (5), 7-5. Fifth seed Tushal Thawani was pushed to three sets by Vishal Passi, whom he defeated 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
