Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 31
The District Consumer Court Redressal Forum has directed the SDO (electricity, Sector 18) to pay a compensation of Rs 25,000 to a consumer, S.P. Jain.

The complaint was filed by Jain who died during the proceedings in 2003. The file pertaining to the case got lost, but the opposite party tried to recover the amount, against which Manoj Jain, son of the complainant, filed a petition.

Jain had received an electricity bill of Rs 6,599 on February 20, 1990. He said Rs 5,991 was added as arrears whereas the current charges were shown as Rs 265. Jain had occupied the house in 1990. He stated that Baldev Ram Aggarwal was staying in the house before Jain shifted.

In reply, the SDO concerned accepted that the fault was of the owner of the house and stated that they only wanted to recover the bill.

The forum opined that Jain was not liable to make the payment. Also, the power board official did not change the dead meter and allowed the replacement to linger on for more than two years during the tenancy of Baldev Aggarwal.
