Nurpur, October 31
Octogenarian Congress stalwart Sat Mahajan, who dominated the political scene in the state for more than five decades, has called it a day citing age and family problems.
The Congress veteran and revenue minister served five terms in the Assembly, remained a minister for 18 years and the PCC chief for three terms. At a press conference here last night he said he would, however, continue to do “social service through politics”.
Mahajan, who started his career as an unopposed member of the local municipal committee 57 years ago, expressed gratitude to the people of his constituency for reposing faith in him for such a long time.
Declaring his son and state Congress general secretary Ajay Mahajan as his political successor, Mahajan said if the party high command gave the ticket to him for the Assembly elections, he would beat his record of highest margin of votes in the merged areas of the state.
Without naming anybody, he accused his detractors of circulating anonymous letters to defame him and his family members.
