Govt college paddlers win title

Ludhiana, November 1
Government Polytechnic College, Patiala, overpowered Government Polytechnic College, Ludhiana, 3-2 to win the table tennis title in the Punjab Government Technical Institutions for Women Sports Meet (table tennis and badminton) being held at the Government Polytechnic College, Ludhiana, here today.

In the final,Patiala paddlers went down in the first match when Sumanpreet lost to Shweta in straight sets 4-11, 1-11 and 2-11. They bounced back into the match winning the next one as Ritika thrashed Jyoti 11-2, 11-7 and 11-6.

Radhika of Patiala went down fighting against Navedita 7-11, 13-11, 13-11, 11-6 and 8-11. In the third match, Ritika of Patiala overcame stiff challenge from her rival Shweta 12-14, 14-12, 11-8 and 11-3 to level the score two-all.

In the deciding match, Sumanpreet fought bravely against Jyoti whom she drubbed 11-7, 11-7, 4-11 and 11-8 and enabled Patiala to fetch the title.

In the hard line cup match, Government Polytehcnic College for Women, Patiala, outplayed Government Polytechnic College, Khunimajra, 3-1 to secure third spot.

In badminton, Government Polytechnic College, Ludhiana, and Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Government Polytechnic College, Ajitwal, won their respective semifinal matches to set up the title clash. The final is slated for tomorrow.

Handball tourney from tomorrow

Ludhiana, November 1
Twenty-seven teams will be vying for top honours in hockey while rest from all districts will be competing in the 53rd Punjab State Schools Hockey and Handball Tournament for boys and girls (u-19) to be held at different venues in Ludhiana from November 3 to 7.
