Need to manage paddy straw: Don

Ludhiana, November 2
Director of extension education, Punjab Agricultural University, N.S.Malhi has said that the paddy crop sown over 25 lakh hectare produces 20 million paddy straw in the state. Efforts are being made to develop technologies for managing this residue through mechanisation and other means. The department of farm power and machinery, Punjab Agricultural University, has developed machines like happy seeder, straw baler, and flat type chopper-cum-spreader.

Shalini wins debate contest

The Diamond Jubilee Punjab University Youth Festival at Ramgagria Girls College entered the fourth day today. In debate: Shalini of S.D.P College for Women stood first while, Shruti Sharma of Government College for Women and Shivani Mehta of Guru Nanak Girls College stood second and third, respectively.

In poetry recitation: Ritu Jain of Khalsa College for Women stood first while Kawalpreet of Guru Nanak Girls College and Harleen Kaur Dua of Government College for Women clinched the second and third position, respectively.

In Elocution: Ekjot Gujral of Khalas College for Women stood first while Ruchika Sharma S.D.P College for Women stood second and Ginny Karir of GCW stood third.

Minister for technical education Swarna Ram presided over the morning session of youth festival. Addressing the function, the minister exhorted the students to acquire excellence in the professional education so that they could compete for the enormous job opportunities at the world level. The students should focus on learning the latest techniques in their respective fields. He said the students should also give attention toward the extra curricullar activities to improve their integrated personality. He announced a grant of Rs 1 lakh for the college.

Career counselling at Green Grove

Doraha, November 2
A career-counselling programme was organised for students of senior and outgoing classes at Green Grove Public School, Mohanpur, today.

Mel Broitman, the director, Winstor University, Canada, along with the liaison officer Amrita Mangat, discussed the various avenues open for the Indian students at the Canadian universities, when they pass out their matriculation or senior secondary class. They discussed the opportunities available especially at Winstor University and Gulph University, situated in Hamber.

As the counselling programme was designed for the schools of the entire district, the students from surrounding schools too participated in it.

The queries of the student regarding the on-going courses at these universities, the fee-structure, working hours, career options available and the duration of various courses were responded to by the organisers. — OC

Seminar on sustainable development

Mandi Gobindgarh, November 2
RIMT-IMCT, will be organising one-day panel discussion on ‘Sustainable Development’ in its campus on November 5. The discussion will be inaugurated by Dr B B Tandon, chairman, Ludhiana Stock Exchange and former dean of UBS.

The experts who will be taking part in the discussion are PS Sodhi, National coordinator, UNDP, Dr Avinash Julka, departmet of economics, Panjab University, Dr MS Grewal, director, CICS, Dr Surinder Singh, director, RIMT-IMCT, Dr HL Verma, department of management, GJU, Hissar, Dr Prem Kumar, director, Aurobindo College of Commerce, Ludhiana. — OC

Students’ drive to shun crackers

Ludhiana, November 2
An inter-house poster-making competition was held at Green Land senior Secondary School, here, today. The students highlighted the ill effect caused by burning of crackers.

The students made an appeal to the society to make their city a noise free zone and urged public to join hand to save the city from cracker pollution. They also conducted a protest march against cracker pollution. Jagriti House was adjudged the best in the poster-making competition. Rajesh Rudra, director of the school, gave away the prizes. — TNS

Recruitment started at PCTE

As many as 51 students of Punjab College of Technical Education MBA final year have got their placement assured with the major Banks and MNC’s, during it campus placement programme.

NKS Kang, Trident has picked up six students of PCTE at the package of Rs. 6.60 Lakh per annum for the position of deputy manager. Reliance General Insurance has offered Rs. 5.71 Lakh per annum to five MBA final year students of PCTE. ICICI Bank has selected 10 students of PCTE at a package of Rs. 3.71 lakh per annum for the position of assistant manager band- 1.

The Punjab Day was celebrated at Doraha College of Education yesterday. Noted novelist and Sahitya Academy award winner, Niranjan Singh Tasneem, was the chief guest.

He spoke on the importance of Punjabi as their mother tongue. Addressing the budding teachers he pointed out that teaching is the noblest profession and we should take pride in being teachers.
