Dyal Pura Bhai Ka (Bathinda), November 2
Parma Singh, 25, who was trapped in a 50-foot pit while digging a bore-well here on Wednesday, was brought out dead today, 48 hours after the incident.

Parma was unlucky. He had offered to take the place of Baljit, his brother, to dig the well. After some time, Baljit sensed the earth had begun to cave in and asked Parma to come out. It too late; within seconds Parma was buried under falling bricks that had been laid in.

Just a day before, another labourer, Manga Singh of Hamirgarh, had died in a similar incident.

The civic authorities, and localites, tried all they could with their limited means but the sandy land frustrated every new attempt at digging down to get at Parna.

Parma’s body was sent to the civil hospital at Rampura for a post-mortem before it was handed over to his family. Parma is survived by his wife and two children.

Rahul Tewari, Bathinda deputy commissioner, said because of technical reasons the Army was not able to help when it was contacted.

Four JCBs were brought from Rampura block, Maur and Bathinda to help in the rescue. Seven tractors were deployed by the villagers. Uma Shankar, SDM of Rampura Phul, said sandy area turned out to be a major hindrance.

Permission has to be taken before a well is dug but the land-owner in this case had not. Balvinder Singh, DSP of Rampura Phul, said a case had been registered against Joginder Singh under Section 304-A, IPC.

The Red Cross has announced Rs 10,000 for the family members of Parma Singh while Rs 75,000 will be paid by the market committee of Rampura Phul.
