100 Bhutta students honoured

Mandi Ahmedgarh, November 4
As many as 100 students of the Bhutta Groups of Colleges were honoured for their achievement in various academic and extracurricular fields. They were felicitated by former education minister Tota Singh and former minister for technical education Jagdish Singh Garcha at a function organised at the institute campus at Bhutta village, near here, yesterday.

The function was marked with presentations by the students of Bhutta College of Education and Bhutta College of Engineering. Skits and plays projecting social evils of modern society like female foeticide, drug addiction, casteism and brain drain.

Priyanka Sethi and Sidharath of computer science and engineering; Neha Nupoor and Hardeep Singh of information technology; Saloni and Varinder of electronics and communication engineering; Shivani and Rachit of electrical engineering; Kajal and Pawittar Singh of MBA were chosen Miss and Mr Fresher, respectively, among their groups.

Results: Collage making: 1 Navneet Kaur; mehndi: 1 Shelly; still-life painting: 1 Mandeep Kaur; phulkari: 1 Rajbir Kaur. Fifty students who had secured more than 80 per cent in various examinations received merit certificates.

Mann Singh Garcha, Sukhdev Singh Garcha, Balbir Singh Garcha, directors of the trust, V K Sharma, principal, BCET, and Rakesh Chandar, principal, BCE, also spoke.

Gurmat camp at GGN College

Ludhiana, November 4
Many Sikh scholars gathered here to participate in a Gurmat Training camp organised at Gujrawala Guru Nanak College today. They debated on various ways and means, which could be adopted to channelise the energy of youth so as to keep them away from narcotics and drugs.

Besides, teaching the preaching of Sikhism to participating students from different schools and colleges, the scholars, including the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtaar Singh Makkar, enlightened the students about importance of five K’s and five Takhats in Sikh religion and doctrine of Miri and Piri. The students also vowed to keep their hair and observe the preaching of Sikh religion.

The camp went underway in the morning with Dr S.P. Singh, president, Khalsa Educational Council.

The students participated in various competitions such as quiz, painting and poetic recitation.

Prabhjot Kaur, principal Gurmat College, Patiala, Prof Amarjeet Singh Dua, Dr Sarabjeet Singh, Prof Manjit Chhabra and Tarlochan Singh, principal of the college, also spoke.

Diamond jubilee festivities at Sacred Heart

To mark the Diamond Jubilee year, Sacred Heart Convent senior secondary school, Sarabha Nagar, today organised its annual function. Ashok Ganguly, chairman,CBSE, Delhi was the chief guest. Attired in ethnic punjabi dresses, performed gidda and bhangra. ‘Jaago’ was taken out. The function started with 'manglacharan', a sequence dance. The young students performed on 'Ringing in the festivity - a carnival of bells'. The Hindi skit 'jhoothh ka alam' depicted how sometimes elders unwillingly and inadvertently end up teaching wrong values to their children. The 'Kuchipudi' presented by the students was appreciated too. Dressed like different cartoon characters Ninja Hathori, Tom and Jerry, Popeye the sailor man, Micky mouse etc, the students brought all alive on the stage in a pageant of cartoons. An English play, "The sound of music” based on the critically acclaimed Hollywood movie and all appreciated book on the life of famous Von Trapp family on Australia. The function concluded with the National anthem.

‘Roshini’ at DIMT from today

Doraha, November 4
In continuation of its tradition, a two day inter-school and inter-college annual cultural competition “ROSHI- 2007” is being organised at the Doraha Institute Of Management and Technology, Doraha, on November 5 and 6, respectively.

Dr Lekhi, director of the institute, in a press note issued today said the institute had received an overwhelming response from various schools and colleges for participating in the programme.

The contestants will compete in rangoli, creative writing, quiz, poster making, bindas bol, cartooning, collage making, mehndi, face painting, dance and folk song competitions.

Gautam Cheema, IPS, SSP, Khanna, will be the chief guest in the morning session. — OC

Tiny tots colour earthern pots

Ludhiana, November 4
Maple Bear Canadian play way and nursery school celebrated Diwali with great enthusiasm and fanfare. Kids colour the earthen pots. Teachers made Rangoli and decorated the school with a message ‘WELCOME TO THE GODS’. Tiny Tots also danced on the Diwali songs. Veena Aggarwal, principal, taught the importance of the festival to the kids. She also explained the children about the ill-effects of the crackers. — TNS
