CWC to meet ahead of AICC session

New Delhi, November 4
The Congress Working Committee is meeting here on Wednesday to review preparations for the All India Congress Committee meeting scheduled here later this month.

Party sources said the CWC is likely to take stock of the political situation in the backdrop of the bitter stand-off between the UPA and the Left on the Indo-US nuclear deal. The issue is expected to figure prominently in the Winter Session of the Parliament beginning on November 15.

Senior party leaders are planning to move a single comprehensive resolution at the end of the November 17 meeting instead of separate documents for political, economic and other issues.

The CWC will review the preparations for the AICC meeting which is also expected to be a launching pad for Rahul Gandhi, who was recently made the general secretary, and is being projected as the future leader of the party.

The session would be held at the Talkotra stadium on November 17 and preceded by a meeting of the Congress Working Committee the previous day.

The Left Parties, the key outside supporters, are against operationalising the deal and the Congress leaders, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party chief Sonia Gandhi, are insisting that it is a good deal and in the country’s interest.

An amendment to the party Constitution is also likely in the session to make a single category of party members instead of the current ‘primary’ and ‘active’ membership. — PTI
