College-NGO spat over Bhagat Singh
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, November 7
Selling of literature on Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh by the Jan Chetna distribution centre outside Guru Nanak Engineering College has not gone well with the college authorities, who said “the martyr was being projected as a Leftist and an atheist”.

Dr Darshan Singh of the NGO said the van exhibiting the literature was not allowed to leave the place for some time.

He said they had parked the van outside the college. Soon after, the authorities started asking them to leave the place. “We asked them who could stop us from selling literature on the martyr. They told us that we were portraying him as somebody who did not believe in God and they did not want us to teach all this to their students,” he said.

He alleged that later the college authorities did not allow them to drive away. “It was really sad that we were being seen as anti-social elements while showcasing literature on Bhagat Singh,” he said.

The college principal, H.K. Grewal, said she was on leave and had gone to the college only in the afternoon. She said the college had great regard for the martyr and they had even organised a function to celebrate his birth centenary.

She said she had only told the organisers that they should have come during the function as the examination season was starting soon..
