Support system for juvenile diabetics
Ludhiana, November 14 Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood which can strike at any age, including pre-school children and even toddlers. This year, the theme of World Diabetes Day, being observed today, is "diabetes in children and adolescents," and therefore, the focus is on management of the condition to provide a better quality of life to the young patients. According to Dr Mary John, in charge of endocrinology and Diabetes Clinic at CMCH, "In the wake of increasing prevalence of diabetes among the younger age groups, the institution had set up the Juvenile Diabetic Club, which has yielded excellent results. Most of these children enrolled in the club are suffering from Type 1 diabetes which requires insulin from the onset as medicines alone are not sufficient," she said. Commenting on the plight of children afflicted with diabetes, Dr Mary remarked the daily life was disrupted by the need to monitor blood glucose levels, regular intake of medication, and balancing the effect of activity and food. Diabetes could interfere with the normal developmental tasks of childhood and adolescence, which include succeeding in school and transition to adulthood. At present, the club has more than 70 members who meet at least once in three months. During these meetings, special, supportive interactive sessions are arranged for both the child and his or her parents to pass on vital information about diabetes management. |
