Pranab, Dasmunsi meet Sonia

New Delhi, November 18
Stepping up pressure on the CPM on the Nandigram issue, a delegation of Congress leaders, including union ministers Pranab Mukherjee and Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, today met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and suggested a high-level team be sent to the area to assess the situation.

The delegation, which also included Manas Bhuiyan, Congress Legislature Party leader, and Pradip Bhattarcharya, working president of the PCC, earlier met AICC general secretary Mohsina Kidwai, in charge of party affairs in the state. Kidwai reportedly assured that she would place their demand before the party.

The Nandigram issue is expected to rock Parliament when its brief winter session resumes tomorrow after a three-day break for the winter session.

Main opposition BJP has already moved a motion in the Rajya Sabha for a debate on Nandigram on Monday, alleging the violence-hit area of West Bengal had been converted into a “war zone by state agencies and CPM cadres”.

The notice for the adjournment motion was sent by BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi to the Rajya Sabha secretary-general. The motion seeks the suspension of Question Hour on Monday to allow a discussion on the Nandigram issue. — PTI
