Talent crunch may shrink KPO biz

The KPO market in India would stagnate at $ 10.5 billion against the projected $ 15 billion by 2012 due to a dearth of talented professionals in the absence of relevant institutions for imparting KPO skills in India, industry body Assocham has said.

"Nearly 30 per cent shortfall is likely in the size of KPO business by 2012, which would stagnate at 10.5 billion dollars against the projected 15 billion dollars," an Assocham statement said.

Not only professional shortages of skilled KPO workforce would be acute by then, but emerging competition from low-cost destinations such as The Philippines, Russia, China, Poland and Hungary would also hit domestic KPO prospects, it said.

According to the chamber, the KPO industry would be able to sustain its current pace of growth of nearly 18-20 per cent with employment opportunities for 30,000 workforce having revenue generation of around $ 3.8 billion provided relevant training institutions are created. — PTI
