SVIET conducts national-level seminar

The mechanical engineering department of the Swami Vivekanand Institute of Engineering and Technology (SVIET) organised a national seminar on automation, robotics and mechatronics yesterday. Pawan Kapur, director, CSIO, Chandigarh, Dr Satish Kumar, director, DRDO, Chandigarh, Dr B.S. Pabla, principal, CCET, Chandigarh, Dr H.K. Sardana, CSIO, Chandigarh, Dr Arun K. Lall, professor, PEC, Chandigarh, prof L.D. Garg, PEC, Chandigarh, Dr G.D. Bansal, director, CEC, Landran, Dr D.S. Hira, principal, SUSCET, Tangori, Dr H.B. Sharda, principal, SBSCET, Ferozepur, Dr T.P. Singh, principal, BBSBEC, Fatehgarh Sahib, Dr S.P. Tayal, principal, SIET, Ambala, Dr S.K. Mahapatra, head, mechanical department, TIET, Patiala, Dr J.N. Sharma, professor, NIT, Hamirpur and Dr Anand Vaz, head, mechanical department, SLIET, Longowal, made up the distinguished advisory committee. The Advisory Committee received over 150 technical papers for the seminar on automation, robotics and mechatronics from all over the country.

Industrial visit

Aryans Business School (ABS) here organised an industrial visit for its MBA students. Around 60 MBA students visited the Amrit Banaspati Company (ABC), Rajpura. Students visited various departments of the company, including manufacturing, marketing, human resources, research & development and finance. The purpose of the visit was to make students aware of the various practical management aspects.

V.K. Verma, general manager and B.S. Jaswal, manager, human resources, Amrit Banaspati Company (ABC), interacted with the students in the company. Each group was accompanied by an official from the company who explained each and every stage of the process involved.

Placement drive

Simplex Infrastructures Ltd established by HP Lancaster of UK organised a joint campus placement at the Indo Global College of Engineering. As many as 650 students of civil and mechanical engineering from 13 Engineering Colleges of Panjab and Haryana participated in the gruelling placement drive.

The selection team was led by Senior Manager (Technical) D.N. Basu, D Ghosh and Pradeep Tiwari.

Head placement and training Col R.S. Khera told that selected students will be employed as assistant engineers at various company projects in India.

Campus interviews

Standard Chartered Bank representatives conducted campus interviews at the Chandigarh Business School (CBS) Landran. As many as 83 students from the CBS took part in the selection procedure. The selection procedure included a written test and personal interview. The finally selected candidates would be given a package of Rs 2.4 lakh per annum. Addressing the participating students, Nitin Trikha, sales manager, informed that Standard Chartered Bank employs about 55,000 people, representing over 90 nationalities, worldwide. Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chairman and Rashpal Singh Dhaliwal, president, said their top priority was to get all the eligible students placed before they passed out.

Visit

Vishal Mittal, sales manager, Channel Development, ICICI Prudential, Patiala, today visited I.T. Business School at Banur. He told students that the fast growing insurance industry has made huge jump in the last few years. He also informed students that only 2.8 per cent of the Indian population is insured, rest of the market was untapped. Deepti Mahajan, CEO welcomed Vishal Mittal and asked the MBA students to tap the fast growing insurance sector. Prof P.P. Arya, director of the Institute said vast population of India is yet to be covered under insurance sector, especially the poor and downtrodden sections.

Panchkula

Annual function

The auditorium of Manav Mangal School, Sector 11, Panchkula, was abuzz with excitement on the last day of the school’s three-day annual function, which concluded today. R.R. Fuliya, commissioner and special secretary, Haryana, graced the occasion as the chief guest and lent auspiciousness to the celebrations by lighting the sacred lamp. Accompaniment of recital of flute mesmerised the whole atmosphere with a touch of mysticism.

The show commenced with Ram stuti fervently invoking lord Rama. A group song highlighted the urgent need of providing healing touch and restoring peace in Kashmir. A well synchronised foot-tapping mythological dance depicted the multifaceted form of lord Krishna.

Thereafter, dancers rocked the auditorium on thrilling beats of Chak De India. In the end, preserving cultural heritage and traditional identity through folk dances, the girl students presented gidda.

Function held

D.C. Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 7, Panchkula, celebrated its annual function at D.C. Montessori School, Mani Majra, on Saturday.

The function was presided over by S.K. Setia, DPI, schools, Chandigarh.

Workshop on female foeticide

Chandigarh, November 25
Government College for Girls, Sector 42, will hold a workshop on ‘Fighting Female Foeticide’ tomorrow. The workshop is a part of the Chandigarh administration's multi-pronged drive to understand and address the issue in contemporary Indian society, especially in areas in and around Chandigarh. Preparations for the workshop have been in full swing for a number of days. The teachers and students are busy painting placards, coining slogans and putting up posters. More than 250 students will attend the day-long workshop to be conducted by eminent gender trainers Jaya Shrivastava and Sharmila Vipin.

Competition: Ishaan Shandil and Nitish Sundriyal of DAV Senior Public School, Surajpur, grabbed the winning trophy in the Principal Milkhi Ram Mahajan Memorial Kavita Path during the 38th All-India Inter-state Inter-school Cultural Competition held at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here, today. The second prize was shared by Rohit (St Kabir School-26) and Nitish Sudriyal (DAV Senior Public School, Surajpur) while the third prize went to Dishajain of Bhawan Vidyalaya-27, Chandigarh. The consolation prizes were given to Sriyansh of Army School, Chandi Mandir, and Upasana Dhami of Hans Raj Public School, Sector 6, Panchkula.

Raising Day
NCC cadets run for fun

Chandigarh, November 25
The week-long NCC Raising Day celebrations culminated with a run-for-fun from Sukhna Lake to NCC Group Headquarters, Sector 26, here today. About 500 cadets took part in the run spreading the NCC motto ‘Unity and Discipline’. The event was presided over by minister of state for finance Pawan Kumar Bansal. The minister gave away prizes to the cadets who participated in run and to those who won the painting, essay-writing and singing competitions organised during the week.

The pinnacle of the event was the pledge undertaken by the cadets against female foeticide and dowry wherein they vowed to help in eradicating these evils from society.

The last Sunday of November is observed as NCC Raising Day. The NCC was raised in 1948 and since then it has undergone a revolutionary change. It is the world’s largest uniformed force and is aimed at inculcating discipline and leadership qualities among the youth.

Chandigarh, November 25
The Pracheen Kala Kendra presented a special programme ‘Kathak Shringaar’, featuring world-renowned Singaore-based kathak danseur and guru Pandit Charan Girdhar Chand, at the Randhawa auditorium of Punjab Kala Bhavan here today. He was ably supported by Chandigarh-bred danseuse Ramni Kashyap and daughter Aditi Kashyap now settled in Singapore.

The programme started with a solo performance by Ramni Kashyap. Expressing the nuances of the Jaipur gharana of kathak, which she has imbibed from her guru Shobha Koser and later from Chand at Singapore, Ramni began her presentation with an invocatory item Saraswati vandana. She delineated the fundamental elements of kathak like aamad, thaat, uthaan, tode, tukre, footwork and other technical parts of the dance form.

Chand assumed the charge of the stage and familiarised the audience with the subtleties of the gharana in his innovative style. He added a new dimension to the traditional tatkar, raas ka toda, Govardhan Leela, and chakkars amidst thunderous applause.

Chand and Ramni then performed a duet Shringaar item based on Krishna-Radha followed by a thumri ‘Bayain na marode’, depicting the pranks of Radha-Krishna. They displayed intricacies of laya, taal and synchronisation. Ramni Kashyap's next presentation of ‘Solah-Shringaar’ was specially appreciated by the audience. The artistes were at their best in Abhinaya part as they executed various moods of Radha-Krishna with subtle facial expressions, soft and dignified movements. A ‘Pushpanjali’ by rising kathak dancer Aditi Kashyap came next.

Pandit Girdhar paid a tribute to his father through an item ‘Choom chan nn nn nn’ and concluded with ‘Anand Tandav’, displaying rhythmic and speedy footwork. Shri M.L. Koser, director of the kendra, honoured the artistes.
