Call for 36-hr Assam bandh

Guwahati, November 25
The All Adivasi Students Association of Assam (AASAA) has called for a 36-hour Assam bandh from 5 a.m. on Monday in protest against the failure of the Assam government to protect Adivasi protesters who had faced brutal ire of local people in the Beltola area of Guwahati yesterday while taking out a rally demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The state government has sounded red alert all over the state, apprehending backlash in sensitive areas over yesterday’s violent clashes here.

The Assam state unit of the BJP has extended “moral support” to the bandh call given by the AASAA. State BJP president Ramen Deka said, "We have decided to extend moral support to the bandh called by AASAA. We believe that timely action on part of the administration could have saved the situation from going out of control."

AASAA general secretary Joseph Minjh has demanded judicial inquiry into yesterday’s bloody clashes to find out who had started the vandalism that exposed AASAA protesters to the ire of local people.

He said there was possibility that some vested interests were out to spark the clashes to drive the wedge between the community and Assamese people. "We also agree that some of the young people among our protesters were so frustrated over the government's lukewarm attitude towards our 60-year-old demand for ST status that they just lost cool and started the vandalism defying wishes of the AASAA leadership,” he said.

The AASAA leader alleged that the death toll in yesterday’s violence would be more than what the government figures said. “Over 200 of our protesters were still missing and we suspect that somebody had hidden at least 20 bodies,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Assam government has ordered a commissioner-level inquiry into Saturday’s violent clashes that left one dead and about 240 injured. Curfew along violence-affected areas along the Dipur-Basistha Chariali road was relaxed for 12 hours from 8 a.m. today due to improvement in the situation.

Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and BJP leader Arjun Munda who was here to take stock of the situation alleged hand of the state government behind Saturday’s clashes and raised serious doubt how the intelligence had failed to alert the administration about what was happening so close to the state’s capital complex. He demanded judicial inquiry into the incident.

Munda, who visited injured Adivasi protesters in Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), alleged that proper treatment was not being given to many of them.

“The Congress should do away with its vote bank politics with Adivasis in Assam and accept their long-standing demand for ST status. The BJP is for according ST status to Adivasis in Assam. The party would raise the issue in Parliament,” he said.
