Ludhiana, November 25
There is no end to congratulatory calls that Dr Charan Kanwal Singh, uncle of Ishmeet Singh, who was crowned “Voice of India” last night, is receiving. And the moment is joyous not just for this family, but for the industrial town as well, which celebrated Ishmeet's victory, declared late last night, by bursting crackers, beating of dhol and dancing.

Now that he has won, Ishmeet will start working as per his contract with Big Music. He will also be visiting the city on December 2.

"There are varied offers and even lots of brands are keen to rope in him. But the first assignment on hand is the 2-year contract with the music company," said Dr Singh.

For his well-wishers and fans, who voted in high numbers, it is a moment of pride. They put to rest all debates on public voting. "He is very talented. Despite not being a trained singer, the quality of his voice and hard work were visible. I always voted for him and so did my friends. I feel he has done not just Ludhiana but the entire Punjab proud," said Rajat Sharma, a college student.

Ishmeet, during his recent visit to the city, said he was quite sure his well-wishers and God's blessings would get him to the top. "It is the public that we perform for and they have all right to select or reject the person they want," he had said. His journey, say his friends, has just begun. "People have high hopes from him and it is just the beginning of his journey. I am sure he would come out with lots of good music for us all in the coming days," said Sarika, another resident.
