Course on intensive agriculture begins at PAU

Ludhiana, November 28
A training course on “Impact of Intensive agriculture on environment quality” started today in the department of soils, Punjab Agricultural University. This 3-week course is being organised under the aegis of the ICAR sponsored centre of advanced studies in soil science. Scientists from different state agricultural universities are participating in the course. Lectures by eminent experts on various aspects relating to the theme of the course will be organised. Fifty resource persons from the different departments of PAU, besides three guest speakers from outside, will be interact with participants.

Dr Viraj Beri, director of the centre and head of department of soils, said this centre of advanced studies was established in 1994 and has been carrying out the activities commensurate with the objectives envisaged under its programmes.

Training course on climate change starts

Ludhiana, November 28
A 21-days training course on “Climate change vis-a-vis agricultural productivity and modelling their inter-relationships” started today in the department of agricultural meteorology in which 25 scientists from different disciplines are participating. Addressing the inaugural session, Dr N.S. Malhi, director of extension education, discussed about the effects of climate change on agriculture. He cautioned about large scale burning of paddy straw. He said duration of crops would decrease due to increase in temperature and productivity of wheat and rice would decrease under changing climate scenario.

Dr S.K. Mann, dean. postgraduate studies and chairperson of this course. elaborated the effects of climate change on agriculture. She further explained that increase in night temperature will decrease the rice yield and in north-western India.

Dr G.S. Bains, head of the department-cum-course director, welcomed all participants.

14 selected in placement drive

Mandi Gobindgarh, November 28
The RIMT Group of Institutes, Mandi Gobindgarh, arranged a campus placement drive for B.Tech computer science, IT, electronics and communications, electrical, instrumentation, IT engineering and MCA.

In the drive, 754 students from 20 colleges appeared. CMM Level 5 company visited RIMT-IET campus and selected 14 engineers.

Dr Pritpal Singh, principal of the institute, welcomed K. N. Visveswaran, mentor campus recruitment, Eugene Xavier, assistant general manager, HRD, and team members.

Harmit Singh Taluja, head training and placement department, said 14 students were selected and offered a package of around 2.5 lakh per annum with upgradation training on required tools and technologies.
