Heavy turnout in PAU union poll

Hundreds of non-teaching employees of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) cast their vote near PAU Employees Union office here today. A lot of hustle and bustle could be witnessed on the campus with candidates belonging to both major groups, escorting their candidates to vote at their respective booths.

Employees, both men and women, working at the offices of registrar, comptroller, estate office, store purchase, director seeds, dean PGS, XEN electrical, economics and sociology, college of home-science, college of agriculture, seed technology, wheat farm, cotton farm, etc reached the venue in time to cast their votes.

V.K.Dutta, chairman of the election committee, said there were 1,608 voters out of which 1,200 had already cast their votes before noon. The voting process started at 9 am in the morning and was over at 4:40 pm. Dutta said 300 voters had already cast their votes in the first hour of voting.

Maur group supporters voted for "mango", the sign of the group while Mundi candidates voted in favour of "cycle". Both the groups had arranged langar outside the voting hall where hundreds of employees had guru ka langar.

"One of the group has to win and other has to lose but the enthusiasm of employees can be seen only during election days in the university", said Ujagar Singh, one of the employees, who had come to cast his vote.

The counting of the voting will be held tomorrow and all results are expected to be announced after lunch, said Dutta. Both Maur and Mundi stressed that they believed in peaceful voting and had all faith in God and their well-wishers. Mundi claimed to change the scenario by winning the elections while Maur claimed to win with a huge margin this time, too. The candidates of both the groups were seen interacting with their supporters throughout the day.

Sanjiv, Zulafkar adjudged best painters

Mandi Ahmedgarh, November 29
Sanjiv Kumar Pal and Zulafkar Mallick of MGMN Senior Secondary School were adjudged best painters for highlighting causes and consequences of poor dental hygiene. Local health authorities organised the competition as a part of the ‘Dental Health Awareness Fortnight’ at the school campus today.

Dr Yusuf Randhawa, dental surgeon, presided over the function and Kedar Nath Kapila, president of the Rotary Club, was the chief guest.

Dr Randhawa warned that ignorance of oral hygiene was one of the major causes of gastroenteritis and related deceases.

He called upon office-bearers of various social and educational organisations to join hands with the state health authorities in creating awareness about dental care.

Falsifying myths about importance of milk teeth, Dr Randhwa maintained that these teeth laid foundation for permanent teeth. He stressed that children should be persuaded to brush their teeth at least twice a day.

Dr Mandeep Singh and Pardeep Sharda, secretary of rotary club, also spoke.

Mansi, Ruchika win elocution contest

SDP College for women organised 43rd AD Shroff Memorial Elocution Competition here today. Students from different streams participated in it. The contest was presided over by college Principal Geeta Bhandari. Mansi, Ruchika and Rachna were declared the first, second and third winners, respectively. Certificates and cash prizes worth Rs 1,250, Rs 750 and Rs 500 were given to the winners.

Play staged

The Ludhiana Kala Manch organised a Punjabi play “Rishtey”, written and directed by S.N.Sewak yesterday at Devki Devi Jain College. The play dealt with marital conflicts born out of doubt and lack of trust among life partners. The play also focussed on the generation gap. A large number of students attended the play. College principal Vandana Maini distributed awards among participants. President, Ludhiana Kala Manch, Amrita Sewak, thanked the audience. Towards the end, K.Deep entertained the audience with his popular numbers.

Star contest

Chief secretary of Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle Charan Kamal Singh said a modelling competition “Young Sikh Star of Punjab” would be held on December 2 at Guru Ramdass Academy, Hambran Road, Ludhiana.

Principal Ram Singh said cabinet minister Hira Singh Gabria besides Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Bikram Singh Majithia, Sharanjeet Singh Dhillon and Bikramjeet Singh Khalsa would grace the occasion. Youth services director Satnam Singh Salhopuri said Ishmeet Singh, winner of ‘Voice of India’ will also be present on the occasion.

Cultural fest

Sat Paul Mittal School organised a cultural programme “Safar” at Nehru Sidhant Kender here yesterday evening. Tiny tots enthralled the audience on the occasion.President and CEO,Airtel,Majoj Kohli, was the chief guest.

Director D.B. Sharma, welcomed the guest. The story of Mowgli- the human cub- kept the audience spellbound. English play “A dog in the manger” was also staged.

Quiz contest

The students of Nehru House, Gandhi house and Tagore house took part in the GK quiz contest for the middle section held at Kundan Vidya Mandir. The questions were displayed on the screen through projector for the benefit of the audience. Headmistress Namita Raj Singh congratulated the winners.

Essay writing

An essay writing competition was conducted by the 3 Punjab Battalion NCC, Ludhiana, Spring Dale Senior Secondary Public School, Sherpur. Battalion CO Col Amarek Singh conducted the programme. Result: 1 Gurkamal Singh, 2 Rahul Sadhiora, 3 Rajesh Kumar and consolation prize was awarded to Rohan Ranjan Singh.

Students excel

PCTE students have won gold medals for the four consecutive times out of the six batches that have passed the BCA examination since 1999. Swati Goel of 2004-2007 batches, Punjab College of Technical Education, has won gold medal in the examinations conducted by Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar. Swati Goel topped the university with 88.14 per cent marks. Mohit Sharma got 5th position with 86.33 per cent marks. Shikha Jain and Mannal Singh got 7th and 9th position with 84.76 per cent and 84.02 per cent marks, respectively.

DBIIS students to visit New Zealand

The students of the Desh Bhagat Institute of International Studies who are doing their diploma courses in business management, agriculture, networking and hospitality management would be visiting New Zealand after completing 6 months studies at Desh Bhagat Institute.

Dr Zora Singh, chairman of the Desh Bhagat Group, while inaugurating the 15-day teaching programme being organised by the Wairariki Institute of New Zealand on the college campus said this here today.

He welcomed Geoff, director of hospitality from Wairariki Institute of New Zealand, who joined the Desh Bhagat Campus to conduct different sessions for the students who had enrolled themselves previously for these courses.

Shalini Gupta, director general of the group, said faculty from Wairariki Institute would also be joining the students during the teaching programme.

She said the students presently pursuing 6-month diploma course at college would undertake one-year studies at New Zealand.

While appreciating the hard work being put in by the students at the college, Geoff said that great opportunities awaited these students in Nez Zealand.

Bar council poll: 134 contestants, scene hots up

As the polling days for elections to the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana are nearing, the candidates are leaving no stone unturned to allure the voters. Around 40,000 lawyers will cast their votes to elect 25 members of the bar council for five years. There are 134 candidates in the election fray.

Three local lawyers are also trying their luck. One is sitting member, Balwinder Goel. He was president of the District Bar Association, Ludhiana, twice. Another contestant is Harish Narang, who was elected as member of the bar council after the resignation of Harish Rai Dhanda, the then chairman of the bar council. Thereafter, he was nominated as honorary secretary of the bar council. The third contestant is Harpreet Singh Garcha, a member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee(SGPC). He is son of a senior Akali leader.

Chief parliamentary secretary Harish Rai Dhanda yesterday announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh for the construction of the lawyers’ chamber complex Part-II at the district courts complex. He said in the next coming financial year, he would also grant the same amount to lawyers.

Talking to The Tribune, returning officer Rajeev Duggal said the elections would be fair and impartial. The elections in Punjab and Haryana would be conducted by the government employees working in the election offices of both the states. Expenses would be borne by the bar council. Ballot papers would be published by the Punjab 
government.

He said without proper identification no one would be allowed to cast vote.

He said polling would be conducted in Chandigarh on December 7. In Punjab and Haryana, polling would be done on December 8 at all district headquarters and tehsils.

Ranjit wins poetry recitation contest

To improve the oratorical skills of students a poetry recitation contest in Punjabi, Hindi and English and a declamation contest was organised by the Literary Societies of Concerned Languages and the National College for Women, Machhiwara. Writer Mr Gurpal Litt presided over the function. Hamdardvir Nausheharvi presided over the declamation contest.

Jagtar Sekha, Harjinder Pal Singh, S.Naseem and Harjit Vishanji were also present on the occasion. College principal Parminder Singh Benipal welcomed the guests. Thirty-four students took part in the poetry recitation and 11 students in the declamation contest. In poetry recitation Ranjit Sharma and Bindya won the Ist, IInd and IIIrd prizes, respectively, in the Punjabi language. Whereas, Kirandeep, Anu and Shama secured IInd and IIIrd position, respectively, in Hindi. Gurjit, Parminder and Ravinder bagged Ist, IInd and IIIrd position, respectively, in English poetry recitation. In declamation contest Ravinder and Manjit made their mark by securing Ist and IInd position whereas Shelly, Sukhdeep and Shama won the third prize.
