IGNOU exams from today; 588 centres set up

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has set up 588 examination centres, including 35 in overseas and 11 in the jails for its inmates to appear in the examination to be conducted in December.

Giving this information IGNOU regional director Ashok Sharma said today that the examinations would commence on December 1 and end on December 31. The examination intimation slips (hall tickets) have been issued to 2, 78,747 eligible students who had applied for appearing in the examinations across the country. At least 12 examination centres, including two for the jail inmates, have been set up in Punjab and Chandigarh. About 31,441 students will appear in examination conducted at these centres, he added.

Sharma said the detailed hall ticket status had also been made available on IGNOU website http://www.ignou.ac.in. The students may download their hall tickets from the website and appear in the examination at their respective centres, he added.

All centre superintendents have been instructed to allow students to appear in examination, even if they do not possess the hall ticket but their names exist in the list of examinees for that centre. He advised such students to come with their identity cards issued by the university during the examination.

Sharma further informed that separate hall tickets would be issued to the students of BCA and MCA for their term-end practical. Students had been advised to contact the regional centre in the last week of December for their practical examinations, the regional director added.

Car driver convicted of causing death

Ludhiana, November 30
Judicial Magistrate Tarsem Mangla has sentenced Jaswant Singh, resident of Raikot, to undergo one and a half years’ imprisonment on the charge of causing death of a pedesterian, Amrit Lal, of BRS Nagar, while driving his car rashly and negligently.

The court also ordered the accused to pay fine of Rs 2,000.

According to prosecution on Feburary 28, 2002, Amrit Lal along with his daughter-in-law, Teena Loomba, had gone for evening walk.

When they reached near Gurdwara Sahib, D block-BRS Nagar, the accused hit them with his car. He was driving rashly and negligently.

Badly injured, Amrit Lal was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Teena had noted down the registration number of the car. She informed the police. On April 8, 2002, the accused was arrested by the police.

During the trial, the accused pleaded not guilty.

But after appreciating the evidence on record, the court found him guilty and sentenced him.
