Principals give green light
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 1
It has been decided in principle that the BA/BCom/BSc I examinations will be conducted by the colleges. This was deliberated upon today during the principals’ conference held today at Golden Jubilee Hall, PU campus. More than 60 principals from various colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh attend the conference. Though at the initial stages, many principals objected to the implementation of this decision, the vice chancellor appealed to them to let the new things evolve even if it’s at the experimental level.

Principal A.C. Vaid, principal Suresh Tandon and Dr Harinderjit Kaur supported the VC’s move and it was unanimously passed that the BA/BSc/BCom I examinations would be conducted by the colleges, evaluated in the colleges and the result would be prepared by them for onward transmission to the university for declaration. The VC also announced that the present committee would further be expanded in order to take a final decision and to work on various aspects.

Meanwhie, Vaid told the VC that the university was flouting its own calendar regulations. He alleged that the university office was only following those rules which were creating hindrances in the smooth working of the colleges. He elaborated that the students were eligible to opt for a subject privately where there was no provision for that subject (without practical) in the colleges. The VC assured that the matter would be looked into. There were heated arguments between the principals and dean, college development council, over the issue of sparing their teachers to attend refresher/orientation courses. Many principals objected to the type of language being used by the university to the extent of disaffiliation of the colleges if the teachers were not spared. The principals said how could the colleges be run if they spared four or five teachers from the college during the session. They should attend such courses during summer vacations or winter break.

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 1
The CII’s northern region organised a regional stakeholders’ meet today for the upgradation of the ITIs into the centres of excellence. Sudhir Kapur, chairman of the TET sub-committee of the CII, northern region, said it was very important to properly align the growth drivers in order to sustain the high rate of economic development.

“Our urban-oriented growth has for long concentrated mostly on the relationship between the general education and employment with very little attention paid to the relationship between vocational/ technical education and employment. As a result, the gap between the skills available and skills required has kept on increasing adding to the already acute unemployment problem,” he added.

Vijay Thadani, chairman of the CII education committee, said the union cabinet had approved an amount of Rs 774 crore for upgrading 300 ITIs during the current financial year.

The recently announced central government scheme for upgradation of 1396 ITIs through public-private partnership was another positive step in this direction. Under the proposed scheme, the state government, as the owner of the ITI, continues to regulate admissions and fee while the new management will be given academic and financial autonomy and the central government will provide financial assistance by way of seed money.

Coupling an aesthetic pursuit
S.D. Sharma

As per an old adage, there is always a woman behind the success of a man. The credibility of the adage gets significantly augmented if the woman, despite being an inspiration, also endeavours to be an enlightened partner sharing his passion and pursuits. Rarely does the husband-wife compliment each other in chiselling their traits to marvel in any realm of art, but the academician-artist couple form

Lahore, Pakistan, not only negates the contention but offers a new dimension to the love and life.

In city for an exhibition of their respective solo shows on painting works, the duo shared their views with The Tribune.

A senior lecturer and thesis adviser at Lahore College for Women, University in Lahore, Arfan Javed Augstine feels that in the best and the worst of times, man has found solace in the fine arts. I do not delve into worldly themes rather all my works have been inspired by spiritual influence and a divine feeling. Titled ‘Wilderness’ , the series of paintings depict the agony of a tormented soul of an issueless woman. Augstine feels the art is all about emotions and back home the environment is not very congenial for our artistic urge to grow as it is in India.

Only two years junior to Augstine in master's of fine arts, his better half Rebbeca Augustine supplements his views. A lecturer in fine arts at the famous Kinnairt College for Women at Lahore, she has put up

her separate solo show. All 15 works in drawing with a philosophical theme of ‘Being conscious about subconscious’ are impressive with the content and treatment.

The duo was a part of the Pakistani delegation to Delhi for a programme ‘Sanjhe rang Punjab de’. Their exhibitions, sponsored by the Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi, was inaugurated by internationally known artist Shiv Singh.

The exhibits will be on display till December 2 between 10 am to 5 pm.
