Punjab, Haryana ban ‘Aaja Nachle’, UP thaws
Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, December 1
Saturday turned out to be bad and good for Madhuri Dikshit. Her comeback film, “Aaja Nachle”, was banned by the governments of Punjab and Haryana. The Punjab government asked district magistrates (DMs) to decide whether to screen the film after its objectionable content was removed as promised by producer-director Anil Mehta. The good news came from UP when it allowed the film to be shown after cuts had been carried out in the title song. The Punjab action followed protests in Jalandhar. Harcharan Bains, media adviser to the CM, said the decision had come into force with immediate effect. In Haryana, DMs have been told to suspend the screening of the film. Its reasoning: “Heavy resentment among the Scheduled Castes community over some objectionable utterances in a part of the film allegedly demeaning their caste and thereby hurting their sentiments.”
