Mohali, December 2 Addressing the faculty and students of the first school of excellence of Punjab Technical University on its founder’s day celebrations, Dr NP Singh commended the management for spearheading the movement of total quality management in the industry in this region through its innovative programmes. It is leading the companies to achieve better productivity and competitive edge. Padmashri Chandra Mohan, chairman, governing council of the school, which was inaugurated in December 2003 by former President of India Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, said the school’s mission is to propel the Indian industry towards global competitiveness. The function commenced with a welcome address by Manish Trehan, CEO, and an audio-video presentation entitled “Journey so far”, which depicted the impressive progress made by the school in a short span of four years. J.S. Bedi, member of the governing council of the school, in his vote of thanks expressed hope that more and more organisations in the manufacturing as well as the services sector would come forward to take advantage of TQM mission. The professionals undergoing the B.Tech. course in TQM received the certificate on completion of a one-year programme, who also presented a colourful cultural programme in the evening. Annual Day: Students of Golden Bells Public School, Sector 77, celebrated the annual day of its senior branch at Lecma Cinema, Air Force Station, Sector 47, with great pomp and show by presenting a cultural bonanza. The cultural feast was inaugurated by chief guest D.R. Yadav, joint secretary, CBSE, Panchkula, by lighting the lamp of knowledge. The programme started with a graceful Saraswati Vandana. Then the Annual School Report was read out which aimed at giving a glimpse of the school’s performance and achievements in different activities. Prizes and scholarships were given by the chief guest to the meritorious in the school and CBSE Board academics for the session 2005-06 and 2006-07. Scholarships of Rs 300 were awarded to each student attaining 90 per cent and above in Class XI onwards and 95 per cent and above in Classes III to V in the school academics. Merit certificates awarded by the CBSE Board were given to Avleen Kaur, Anku Garg and Monika for outstanding academic performances in English and maths. Scholarships of Rs 2000 were awarded to Kunal, Rubeynderjeet Kaur and Anku, Deepika, for attaining 90 per cent and above in the CBSE Board Examination in the session 2005-06 and 2006-07 respectively. Monika of Session 2006-07 was awarded scholarship of Rs 500 for securing 100 per cent in maths by the school management. Anjali Chaudhry was awarded Teacher of the Year 2007 Award for her sincere and excellent performance in the field of education. The Principal, Gurjit Bawa, thanked the chief guest. |

Mohali, December 2 He gave details of various programmes at the post-graduate level in the University of Warwick (UK) wherein students of DIET can benefit by undertaking post-graduate studies. He stressed that the proposed relationship between DIET and Warwick University (UK) would facilitate the admission of B.Tech students to master’s degree courses of Warwick University. In due course, this interaction can be expanded with the establishment of an MoU, wherein staff visits, exchanges and collective research work between the two institutions can be undertaken. Professor Benerji was introduced earlier to the faculty by Dr S. S. Wadhwa, director, DIET. Campus interviews: Karvy, a premier integrated financial services provider, conducted campus interviews at Chandigarh Business School (CBS), Landran, today. The selection procedure for the post of marketing executives and finance executives included a written test and personal interview. The candidates selected finally will be given a package of Rs 1.2 lakh per annum. Addressing the students in a pre-placement talk, Sanjay Mathur, regional head, said Karvy covered the entire spectrum of financial services. Placement: As many as 1,100 Engineering and Computer Applications students from various institutes of the region participated in a campus pool placement exercise conducted for IT giant Infosys Technology, Bangalore, at Rayat and Bahra Bio Technology Centre for Excellence, Sahauran. As many as 1,100 were short-listed for the interviews taken by an expert team of around 40 human resources professionals of Infosys Technology led by Tazia Siddiqui, head, Global Recruitment, Infosys, on the Rayat and Bahra Campus. The chosen B.Tech and MCA candidates, in case of selection, will take off to a handsome start with annual packages ranging from Rs 2.75 lakh per annum to Rs 3 lakh a year. Students selected: Era Group organised joint campus placement at Indo Global College of Engineering, Abhipur. As many as 630 Students from 23 engineering/MBA colleges from the region participated. The selection team comprised company general manager (HR) MS Bakuni, SP Singh Saini, Kumar Nilesh and Munish. Bhukani gave a presentation about the various ongoing projects of civil, mechanical and electrical engineering in the country. Chairman Indo Global Colleges Sukhdev Kumar Singla said 42 students were finally selected. Specialised courses: Patricia Sumner, head of the International Office, University of Arts, London, was at NIIFT here to interact with the students and apprise them about specialised courses being offered at University of Arts London. She also briefly introduced the procedure, available resources and services being offered at University of Arts, London. University of Arts London brings together six of the world’s most prominent colleges for the study of art, design, fashion, communication and performing arts. Patricia interacted with the students and also went round the NIIFT premises visiting all labs, design studios, etc and expressed a high opinion about the student’s potential. She also mentioned that foreign universities preferred students from abroad as it presented an opportunity for cultural exchange. |

Winter School on nanotechnology opened
Mohali, December 2 It has great potential for improving our quality of life. This was stated by Prof N. Sathyamurthy, director, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), while inaugurating the first Winter School on Nanotechnology in Advanced Drug Delivery at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) here today. He also delivered a scientific talk entitled "Atomic and Molecular Clusters: Designer materials for the Nanoworld". Prof P. Rama Rao, director of NIPER, in his welcome address said, “The prospective of nanotechnology to change our world is indeed truly overwhelming. It will definitely have an effect on every aspect of our lives, from medicines, to the power of our computers. Nanotechnology applications other than in the field of advanced drug delivery are emerging in many different areas which are very important such as information technology, material sciences, manufacturing, instrumentation, and energy.” He also mentioned about the NIPER’s Center for Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology, which has been set up for research in new frontiers of pharmaceutical sciences. The five-day activity of the school will comprise lectures by expert faculty from India and abroad, technical presentation and demonstrations on advanced microscopy techniques likes Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning. |

Tiny tots put up colourful show
Chandigarh, December 2 The function started with the lightning of a lamp by the chief guest Hardev Singh. The programme commenced with students of play way enacting rhymes ‘London Bridge is falling down’ and ‘Clap your hands’. This was followed by a dance on film melodies. Student of KG enacted a play titled ‘Tailor’s Friend’ and a wonderful Punjabi dance ‘Soni de nakhre sang lag de’. The programme ended with a fusion dance by Classes I and II students. Later, the chief guest distributed certificates to the participants. POLLUTION PREVENTION DAY: The Eco Club of Maharishi Dayanand Public School, Daria, observed Pollution Prevention Day in collaboration with the UT environment department. An essay-writing competition on various topics concerning environment was organised on the school premises wherein about 100 students participated. Arjun Kumar, Hussain and Neha Sharma got the first, second and third prizes, respectively. In charge of Eco Club Prabha Bhainsora said the main aim of this celebration was to spread the message of pollution prevention. |
Laughter-filled evening at Kalagram
Chandigarh, December 2 The event was organised by the Chandigarh Coaching Centre in association with the NZCC here today. Sculpted by reigning Laughter Challenge star Deepak Raja, the play was presented by the Chintan Kala Manch, Beas, under the direction of acclaimed thespian Hansa Singh. As many as 16 accomplished stage actors, including Karantipal, Vikramjit, Sameer, Malkit Kaur, Jyoti, Arti and others juxtaposed various evils ailing society like drug menace among the youth, unemployment, fraudulent immigration agents. Well-known 'hasya kavis' like Popular Merathia, Hari Singh Dilber and Jagjit Sukhi, with their humour-filled poems on stresses of modern life, provided high doses of laughter to the audience. Hundreds of students and staff members of the institute relished as the comedian duo of Jaggi-Sukhi, which took the evening to pinnacles of meaningful fun. The institute director, Dr Vinod Khera, opined that humour was an essence of life and seeing the present-day stressful lifestyle, we needed to have more such occasions to fill this world with fun and laughter.
