ICL: Visitors shun P’kula hotels
Panchkula, December 3 Be it the lodging of the players, officials and high-profile visitors, Chandigarh has stolen march over the township as the organisers have virtually given a go by to Panchkula. Interestingly, poor infrastructure and general administrative apathy were largely to blame for this sorry state of affairs. With hardly international standard hotel, the organisers had preferred Hotel Taj and Mountview in Chandigarh to lodge the top players to the local hotels. While the hotels in Chandigarh make hay, the local hotels are left to accommodate only the supporting staff of the tournament. “The choice of Panchkula for the ICL tournament was like putting cart before the horse. As infrastructure in the township left much to be desired, the financial benefits are bound to accrue to neighbouring Chandigarh," said Varinder Garg, a local resident. Even in the ICL venue, the Essel Group had created only partial permanent infrastructure. However, outside the stadium, in the township itself, the provision of the infrastructure to make it a tourist destination leaves much to be desired. As the stadium would be put use only for a few days in a year, the viability of the surrounding areas becoming a tourist destination was under question. On the face of it, Panchkula had nothing much to offer on the hospitality and entertainment fronts. So the diversion of business to Chandigarh was expected, conceded a senior functionary of the district administration. Sources said only recently the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) had stepped up its efforts to make auction of commercial sites, including hotel sites, around Sector 3.The provision of basic infrastructure takes a long time and would be developed in due course, a top functionary told The Tribune. With Panchkula hogging the limelight in the cricketing world in the wake of the ICL, the pace of development should pick up eventually in the years to come making it a tourist destination. In fact, with adequate funds coming from the Haryana government, face of the township is set for a makeover, the sources added. |
