Expert dwells on nanotechnology use in medicine
Kulwinder Sangha

Mohali, December 4
There is a need for the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) here to interact not only at the national level but also at the international level to make breakthroughs.

These were the views expressed by Prof Claus- Michael Lehr, head of the department of biopharmaceutics and pharmaceutical technology at Saarland University, Germany, while talking to The Tribune here today. He was here to attend the Winter School on Nanotechnology in Advanced Drug Delivery.

He said nanomedicine was a multi-disciplinary system for which knowledge of physics, chemistry, biology and medicine was required to reach a level of success. All departments required to develop the capability were available at one campus in NIPER, and such a facility was not available in Europe. There were good centres in Europe but not located at one place. He said that he would be happy if energetic and well-trained students from NIPER worked in our laboratories and helped in pursuing our scientific goals. Elaborating on nanotechnology, Lehr said that it was a technology that happened at the scale of nanometres and was a very tiny structure - a billionth part of a metre. With this technology, one could create structures and manipulate systems. These tiny structures could be used as “taxi cabs” for medicine delivery . A drug was a passenger and “ taxi cabs” could drive the passenger to the area of target. These “taxis” had to function in a complex environment.

He said that developing the new technology would take at least 10 years, as medicine was a complex system where time was required to deliver safe drugs. Putting the existing drugs in a “taxi cab” would prove to be much more helpful than looking for new drugs. Lehr’s scientific interest is focusing on biological barriers. One line of his research is dedicated to new cell culture models (e.g. lung, skin, eye), another one to advanced drug carrier systems (e.g. nanoparticles, liposomes and specific bioadhesion). His work was recently recognised by the APV Research Award 2006 for outstanding achievements in the pharmaceutical sciences. Currently, his office at Saarland University coordinated the EU-funded GALENOS network (www.galenos.net <http://www.galenos.net>).
