Ex-SHO booked: The Amritsar Rural police has booked Sukhdev Singh, former station house officer (SHO) of Mattewal police station for representing false reports in the court. The case has been registered against him under various sections of the IPC at Mehta police station. 

CHANDIGARH
Rs 10 lakh grant for Dashmesh Academy: Sri Dashmesh Academy, Anandpur Sahib, will be developed as number one educational institute in the country. The decision to this effect was taken by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal while presiding over a meeting of the Sri Dashmesh Academy Trust, Anandpur Sahib, here on Wednesday. Badal also announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh to carry out an effective publicity campaign of the academy

Woman jailed under NDPS Act: Additional District and Sessions Judge, Hoshiarpur, Sunil Kumar Arora on Thursday, sentenced Jasbir Kaur alias Faujan of Mahilpur to four years of rigorous imprisonment under sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act. He has also fined her with Rs 10,000 and in case of nonpayment of the fine she will have to undergo further imprisonment for three months. According to the prosecution report, Mahilpur police arrested Jasbir Kaur on May 6, 2003 and recovered 100 gram smack from her.

Heroin worth Rs 3 crore seized: Heroin worth Rs three crore was recovered from a Ferozepur-bound train at the Jalandhar railway station, here on Friday. The packets of the contraband were found in an unidentified bag during a routine check by GRP SHO Mandeep Singh. A case has been registered. 

Police hockey tourney from today: The Punjab police will organise All-India Police Hockey Championship-2007 at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here from tomorrow. Talking to mediapersons, the organising secretary of the championship, IG H.S. Dhillon, said as many as 22 teams from all over the country would take part in the event.

Youth beaten to death: A youth in his mid-twenties was beaten to death by a mob at Jodhewal basti here on Friday. He belonged to Kaneth village near the city. The incident occurred over his alleged affair with a girl, reliable sources said. 

2 kg of gold stolen: Thieves decamped with more than 2 kg of gold from Neetu Jewellers here on Friday late in the evening. The shop is located on the Gill road. The Shimlapuri police is investigating the case and details were not known till the filing of the report.

2 mobiles, SIM cards seized from prisoners: Jail authorities have recovered two mobiles and SIM cards from two prisoners lodged in a maximum security jail here. According to jail superintendent Prem Sagar Sharma a team of officers headed by Jiwan Kumar Garg, principal, Jail Training School, Patiala, two mobiles, SIM cards and some cash were recovered on Thursday night from Anil Jain and Tehal Singh lodged in ward No. 9. The duo had been put in solitary cells as punishment.

Meet : The national co-ordination committee of employees and engineers held a meeting on Friday and criticised the state government’s decision to implement the Electricity Act, 2003 which calls for the unbundling of various electricity boards including the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB). A spokesman of the committee Karamchand Bhardwaj said if the government went ahead with its plans, transmission and distribution losses would increase significantly. Power tariff too would increase for all sections of consumers. 

Uniforms distributed : The DAV Public School management distributed uniforms and books to nearly 250 students of DAV school, Kakrala, on Friday. The management also gave away quilts and other daily utility items to people of Kularan, near Kakrala, on the Patiala-Samana road. Chief guest on the occasion was director of DAV schools Hans Raj Gandhar while P.P Sharma, regional director of Patiala and Jalandhar zones and principal of DAV Public School, Kakrala, were also present.

Voter I-cards : The district administration has urged the voters of Patiala town assembly segment to get their voter I-cards made from December 10 to 27. Booth level officers have been appointed at the booths which are as follows: Janka Dulari Arya Girls’ College, Khalsa College (east side), Government College for Girls, SD Senior Secondary School (Arya Samaj), Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School (old Police Lines), Dhudial Khalsa Public School (old Bishan Nagar), Khalsa College (west side), Guru Nanak Foundation School, Government Girls’ High School, Anardana Chowk and Shiv Ashram.

Dhindsa inaugurates three-day health mela: More than 1,650 patients were examined for various diseases by teams of expert doctors on the first day of a three-day Parivar Kalyan Awam Swasth Mela, which was inaugurated by MP from Sangrur Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa at the War Heroes Stadium here on Friday. The patients were also given medicines free of cost at the mela. The mela has been organised with the MP Local Area Development Funds, worth Rs 8 lakh.

Two killed in road accident: Two persons died while seven others were injured in road accident near Ghurakwind village, 20 km from here, on Wednesday.All persons belonged to Akbarpur village from where they were going to Palasaur village near Tarn Taran to solemnise a sagan ceremony.The deceased have been identified as Hardev Singh (20) and his sister-in-law (brother’s wife) Sukhwinder Kaur (28), wife of Baljit Singh. Their jeep was hit by a tractor coming from the opposite side.

Woman sarpanch booked for embezzling funds: Kulwinder Kaur, sarpanch of Boparai village, falling under Patti police station, has been booked for embezzling Rs 5.93 lakh of panchayat funds.The case has been registered on the statement of Block Development and Panchayat Officer (BDPO), Patti.

AMBALA
Accident: The official car of M.S. Ahlawat, Inspector General of Police, State Vigilance Bureau, was partially damaged on Friday when it was hit by a truck near Kalka Chowk at Ambala City. Ahlawat was present in the car when the incident tok place. A case of careless driving was registered against the driver of the truck.

Awareness programme : A programme on LPG safety awareness was organised by Hindustan Petroleum at Lord Mahavir Jain Public School on Friday. Ambala deputy commissioner Mohammad Shayin was the chief guest while area sales manager Rajiv Bhargava was the guest of honour. Organiser Ashok Jain educated the students about the safety measures to be followed while using LPG. The DC exhorted the students to follow the safety tips.

Jhajjar
Body found
: A half-burnt body was recovered from Sankhol village of the district on Friday. The victim has been identified as Ravinder, an employee of the Delhi Development Authority. Residents alleged that Ramesh of the same village had murdered him. The marks on the body revealed that Ravinder had been attacked with an axe. The accused had also tried to burn the body by sprinkling liquor, police sources said.

Ban on loudspeakers
: Deputy commissioner B.S. Malik has, through an order, imposed a complete ban on loudspeakers from 10 pm to 6 am with immediate effect. He said the order had been issued keeping the interests of students, patients in the hospital and the general public. Anybody found violating the order would be imprisoned for six months along with a fine of Rs 10,000.

Vijay Diwas on Dec 16: The district Sainik Board will organise Vijay Diwas at Panchayat Bhawan here on December 16. An official of the board on Friday said ex-servicemen, widows of soldiers and their families would take part in the function. Karnal DC and president of the board B.S. Malik said the district Red Cross Committee would give mixer grinders and shawls to war widows and mothers of soldiers.

Workshop on industrial safety
: The labour department and the Haryana Safety Council jointly organised a workshop on industrial safety management at Ethnic India Complex, Rai, on Friday. Labour commissioner N.C. Wadhwa, who is also the chairman of the council, told the unit owners to adopt safety measures not only for the safety of workers but also for their own benefits.
