JAC welcomes action against DAV-8

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the aided DAV Institutions of Chandigarh today welcomed the stringent action taken by the Chandigarh Education Department, against the management of the DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here today.

The committee comprised of Jaswant Singh, Indu Singh, R.P. Malhotra, Renu Gupta, Ajay Dogra, Balwant Singh of DAV SSS-8 and presidents and secretaries of MCM DAV College, Sector 36 and DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh.

After finding certain irregularities and not complying with the rules and regulations of the Education Department, the grant to the tune of Rs 1 crore, had been withheld till the school clarifies its position.

Earlier, a show cause notice was issued on November 28 to the DAV school on failing to provide the necessary information under the RTI Act, 2005, misuse of PTA Funds, overcharging hostel fees, etc. The education department had proposed to appoint a manager for managing the affairs of the school by dissolving the managing committee.

The JAC, in its meeting held on school premises appreciated the corrective steps taken by the Administration in respect of provident fund and other issues. The committee found that present circumstances were the result of the wrong policies of the management. It appealed to the UT Administration not to retrench any teacher and ensure that all the teachers get their salaries regularly.

R.K. Anand, secretary, DAV College Teachers' Union, said, “Even the managements of the two premier DAV colleges of Chandigarh have been consistently and callously disregarding the statutes contained in the Panjab University calendar and the instructions of the director, Higher Education, Chandigarh. The Panjab University has already issued show cause notice to these institutions for defaulting on retirement dues and asked explanation from them why penalties should not be imposed on them?”

“The PU authorities, the senate and the syndicate are also persuading the DAV management to meet the statutory dues of the employees”, said Prof Anil Sarwal, president, DAV College Teachers' Union.

Prof Uma Joshi, president of the MCM DAV Colleges Teachers' Union, also criticised the colleges and schools for flouting the rules of the RTI Act.

Som Nath, president, Non-teaching Employees Union of DAV College said, “The non-teaching employees of the college have been suffering for over three decades as their statutory dues are not being given to them.”

Lecture on RTI

The Chandigarh Management Association in collaboration with the Rotary Club of (Chandigarh midtown) organised a lecture on ‘demystifying right to information Act’ by Shekhar Singh, former convener of the National Campaign for People's Right to Information here today.

Speaking on the occasion, Shekhar Singh said the RTI Act had empowered people and now they could have access to even the decisions taken by the Union Cabinet.

He said government employees could now ask information regarding basis for their transfers, withholding of their promotions and increments. People in general can seek information regarding infrastructure deficiencies impeding the performance of their duties and in certain cases seek compensation for losses occurred due to lack of advance information as regards to blockage of roads, electricity and water supply disruptions. He said the entrepreneurs and traders could make use of the RTI Act.

Consumer Court
Rlys issued notice on adulterated food

The issue of poor catering service on the New Delhi-Chandigarh Shatabdi was today taken up before the UT State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.

On a complaint of Pankaj Chandgothia regarding unhygienic food aboard Shatabdi, the commission issued orders to the railways to ensure that the catering staff did not serve contaminated food to passengers.

Earlier, he had filed a complaint with the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-II. The railway authorities had stated that they had already taken action on the complaint made by the passenger. They claimed that the name and age of the petitioner and the person who was travelling on the train were not the same and therefore, the complaint was not maintainable.

The forum had dismissed the complaint of Chandgothia.

He filed an appeal before the commission, which came up for arguments today. Justice K.C. Gupta, president of the commission, observed that the complaint was genuine and directions ought to be issued to the railways to be careful in future.

Man acquitted of rape charges

The district and sessions judge, K.K. Garg, has acquitted a Lucknow resident, Mool Chand, of abduction and rape charges.

Mool Chand, working at a Sector 27 sweet shop, was acquitted after the prosecution failed to prove the allegations against him.

As per the prosecution, the father of the victim had lodged a complaint with the police in 2006, accusing him of abducting his 14-year-old daughter. Mool Chand was arrested and the girl was recovered from his custody.

As per the statement of the victim, he took her to Goraya and raped her.

The defence counsel said the accused and the victim had consented to have physical relations and she was not a minor.

But two others get 10-year RI

The UT additional district and sessions judge, Raj Shekhar Attri, today sentenced Ramesh and Ram Chander to 10-year rigorous imprisonment in a rape case. A fine of Rs 25,000 was also imposed on them.

The victim had alleged that she met the accused on her way to a market on September 1, 2006. The accused worked as washermen like her husband.

She said Ramesh told her that her husband was sitting in Ram Chander’s room and had called for her. They took her to the room where both of them raped her.

‘Charan Das Chor’ a bold satire

The much acclaimed play ‘Charan Das Chor’, a master piece of directorial elegance of Padmabhushan Jenab Habib Tanvir, was staged at Bhargava Auditorium here today. The event presented under the aegis of Spic-Macay, the foremost organisation engaged in the promotion and propagation of Indian arts was duly supported by the PGI Resident Doctors Association, said Dr S Lavasa, president of the Chandigarh chapter.

The director had successfully attempted a bold satire on the hypocrite tendencies ailing in society and governance through the story of a thief, Charan Das, the protagonist. The thief dedicated to his profession of stealing does his utmost to truthfully apply the terms laid down by his guru. As the play unfolds, the generous Charan Das Chor faces a series of tests but comes up triumphantly. So he steals only five gold coins from the royal treasury, refuses to ride the royal elephant, rejects the queen’s proposal for marriage and shuns the crowd.

The script evolved from Vijay Daan Tetha's story had been tailored to suit the contemporary milieu, with all the necessary elements of theatre like music, dance, architecture, suggestive of desired environment of chaupal, temple satsang, sometimes the royal court. While Tanvir appeared as Purohit, it was the invincible duo of Chet Ram (Charan Das chor) and Satish K Nishad enthralled.
