Equipment, not talent, hurting India: Rower
Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 13
Meticulous training and good rowing infrastructure and paraphernalia are some factors that give European countries an edge over others, feels local international rower Manjit Singh.

“After seeing the preparation and latest equipment of foreign teams during the Germany visit for Olympics qualifiers, we felt that it was not the dearth of talent here but the scarcity of adequate facilities and infrastructure that was responsible for poor performance,” says Manjit Singh, who is competing in the All-India Inter-University Rowing Competition at Sukhna Lake.

A student of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, Manjit Singh was member of lightweight coxless-four squad.

“Competing with teams from 67 countries, our team secured 24th position in the qualifying competitions. The difference between qualifying timings and ours was 14 seconds,” he says, adding that only proper infrastructure and advanced training programmes can help Indian rowers match teams like Germany, New Zealand and Great Britain in the sport.

Manjeet won two silver medals in the Junior Asian Championship at Singapore in 2006.

A regular participant in national events, Manjeet brought laurels to the country by winning a gold in the South Asian Games held in Sri Lanka last year.

Lamenting the indifferent attitude of the Chandigarh administration and the Chandigarh Rowing Association, the rower feels they care little for less popular games.

Encroachments
Kalka residents up in arms
Arun Sharma
Tribune News Service

Kalka/Pinjore, December 13
The stage is set for a confrontation between residents of Kalka and the authorities over the removal of alleged encroachments along the national highway 22 with the residents deciding to take to streets from tomorrow.

Even as the executive engineer, construction division (NH), PWD border and roads, Panchkula, has issued notices to hundreds of people in the city to remove encroachments by December 13, the residents seem in no mood to oblige the authorities.

Now, miffed at the attitude of the authorities concerned, the residents have decided to organise rallies, dharnas and hunger strike, protesting against the proposed demolition of alleged encroachments. The shops on the highway at Kalka remained closed for the fourth day today.

“Rallies will be held in the market every day in the morning as well as evening while shopkeepers will sit on a relay hunger strike,” said S.S. Nanda, a municipal councillor.

Meanwhile, indiscriminate removal of encroachments by Pinjore residents have resulted in long traffic jams between Surajpur bridge and Pinjore bus stand. It takes at least two hours to cover this stretch of just a few kilometres as the traffic moves at a snails’ pace due to piling up of debri on road sides and lack of substantial police presence.

The administration has also started demolition in Kalka by razing the encroachments by government departments. The boundary walls of the Kalka and Pinjore police stations were also demolished.

Residents of Kalka, however, said the administration was showing undue hurry in demolishing their buildings as the court had asked for the details of the encroachments while the administration had started forcing the people to demolish their buildings without justifying the encroachments.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has asked the deputy commissioner, Panchkula, and highway administration, PWD, Haryana, to present before it, on December 18, complete details with regard to the measurement of the road as per the revenue record and its width as it exists today.
