Students protest change in exam mode
Tribune News Service

Mohali, December 16
Students of BTech at the Punjab Technical University Institute of Total Quality Management (PTU TQM) here are up in arms against a last-minute change in the mode of examinations.

Sunil Kumar, a second year student of the institute, alleged that when they were admitted to the college, they were told that the BTech programme was an ‘open book examination’ system but now the authorities had informed them that books would not be allowed in the examination hall.

“We have appeared in all examinations with books, but less than a month before our semester examinations were to begin, we received a mail from the college authorities that the university had decided to change the system. Only the material provided by the institute would be allowed inside the examination hall,” said Sunil.

When contacted, Chandra Mohan, chairman of the institute, said the university had directed the institute to follow the open book system.

“The university has clarified this year that henceforth the rule of open book examination would mean the ‘study material’ issued by this school and the standard text books only. The clarification further states that it would not include any help book or hand written or printed completed assignments or any such other material,” stated the mail sent to the students.

In response to the students’ complaint, the institute authorities informed them that the PTU had allowed students to use study material and standard text books in the examination hall but not prepared notes and assignments.
