Paediatricians join hands to combat child abuse
Child abuse: Chilling
facts
Chandigarh, December 16 With that end in mind, the IAP has come out with a manual on ‘Recognition and response to child abuse: The Indian scenario’ under its ambitious child rights and protection programme (CRPP) to deal with the scourge of child abuse. In fact, at a workshop at the PGI today organised by the local chapter of the IAP in collaboration with the Unicef, the paediatricians decided to break their silence about the pressing social problem which seemed to have assumed alarming proportions. Inaugurating the workshop, Raji.P.Srivastava, special secretary, health , Chandigarh Administration, appreciated the efforts of the doctors in combating the menace of child abuse. Meanwhile, drawing heavily from several authentic documents, including the national study on child abuse, the manual compiled by eminent child specialists - Dr Kiran Agarwal, Dr Samir Dalwai, Dr Preeti Galagali, Dr Devendra Mishra, Dr Chhaya Prasad and Dr Anjana Thadhani - paints a sorry state of affairs. Apart from sexual abuse figures, the manual alleged that every two out of three children suffer physcial abuse. While 88 per cent children suffer abuse at the hands of the parents, 62 per cent of them endure punishment in government and municipal schools. And the irony of the situation is that a majority of the children do not report the matter to anyone. It is here that the role of the child specialists comes into play, said Dr Dalwai. In fact, with the passing of the Offences Against Children Bill by the Parliament, reporting of child abuse would become mandatory and failure to do so would attract penal action, Dr Dalwai added. Dr Chhaya Prasad stressed the need for the general public to be aware of the possibility of child abuse in our own children and other children around us and take preventive and protective action to create a safe children-friendly environment. |

Bone marrow transplant now routine, says specialist
Chandigarh, December 16 A super-specialist in cancer, he is back in India after getting trained at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. The center is rated as one of the best in the world. “A type of BMT known as MUD (matched unrelated donor), not so far done in India, is also a routine procedure at MSKCC. Another type of transplant known ‘cord blood transplant’ is also performed as routine. For managing blood cancer patients, techniques like ‘laminar flow’, used earlier, are not now used at MSKCC”, adds Dr Sandhu. “The breast cancer clinic at MSKCC is a highly specialised unit. Early detection techniques like physical examination and investigations are done meticulously. A team of more than 20 experts from surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pulmonology, radiology, pathology and nuclear medicine diagnose and treat it. The experience gained from MSKCC will be used to have services on similar lines in Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana” adds Dr Sandhu. Holding Doctorate of Medicine in Cancer from All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Dr Sandhu is credited with revolutionizing cancer treatment in the region by performing Punjab’s first ever bone marrow transplant. MC Poll Today
Fatehgarh Sahib, December 16 The decision was taken at an emergency meeting convened by the district leadership of the party here on Saturday evening. Sources revealed that Sirhind MLA Didar Singh Bhatti had got a notification issued on Friday through which elections had been scheduled to be held tomorrow. The BJP called in the meeting as its leaders felt that the MLA had secretively got the notification issued without taking them into confidence. During the meeting that was presided over by district president of the party Lal Chand Jindal, the BJP passed a resolution to field its own candidate. The name of the candidate would be announced before the elections, the party leaders said. Ever since the previous Congress president of the MC Charanjit Singh resigned from the post in September this year, the SAD and BJP councillors had been at loggerheads. Though the Akali MLA from Sirhind is believed to be supporting Sher Singh for the post of MC president, the BJP is favouring Ashok Kumar Sood. The sources said though BJP and SAD councillors managed to topple the Congress president, but they failed to decide amongst themselves as to who would head the MC. Even a meeting to elect the president that was called on October 3, had concluded without any results as the councillors had failed to reach a consensus. The BJP is contending that Sher Singh, who had won the MC elections as an independent candidate, but later joined the SAD, could not be made president. During the meeting yesterday, district president of the BJP Lal Chand Jindal said times had changed and if need be, the BJP would prove its identity in the district. Speaking to The Tribune, Harish Aggarwal, general secretary of the Sirhind unit of the BJP, said the party had decided that only that candidate would be elected to the post of MC president, who had already proved his undisputed loyalty to either the BJP or the SAD. He said the party would not let any independent to be elected as president of the MC. |

Parking contractor issued show-cause notice
Kharar, December 16 Acting on the complaint of visitors to the complex, SDM R.K. Gupta issued a show cause notice to Neeraj seeking an explanation on the issue. The aforesaid contractor and his employees have been fleecing the visitors since long. Instead of charging Rs 5 for parking a four-wheeler and Rs 2 for a two-wheeler, the contractor has been charging Rs 10 or more for four-wheelers and Rs 5 for two-wheelers. "Most of the visitors to the judicial complex are in a hurry and often pay the amount asked for as parking fees without thinking," said Jarnail Singh, a resident of Dashmesh Nagar. He added that today he was charged Rs 10 for parking his car. When he remarked that even in Chandigarh the parking charges were not so high, the employee on duty snubbed him. Yet another visitor Gurjant Singh alleged that the employees of the contractor even go to the extent of bullying people. "One of the employees snatched away a Rs 10 note from me and claimed that his contractor had taken this parking contract for Rs 6.5 lakh. On inquiry I found that the contract had been taken for a much lesser amount," he added. SDM R.K. Gupta said, "Its only now that I have come to know about this corrupt practice. Many gullible visitors might have been cheated by now. We have asked the contrator to give an explanation and warned him that if the practice is repeated in future, his contract will be cancelled and earnest money forfeited." Gupta added that two of his employees have been asked to sent decoy customers to keep a check on such corrupt practices in future. |
