Chandigarh, December 19 This was the underlining theme of the four-day PGI-ICMR fourth national training course, which began at Centre for Advanced Research in Medical Mycology in the department of medical microbiology of the PGI today. Inaugurating the course, Prof Meera Sharma, head, department of medical microbiology, PGI, highlighted the importance of medical mycology in the present day scenario where fungal infections were commonly found in a large number immuno-suppressed patients at the tertiary care centres. Prof Arunaloke Chakrabarti was the chief resource person. |

Chandigarh, December 19 Kamal Kishore Maderana of Rajasthan with local partner Digvijay Singh Naruka drubbed the duo of Gaurav Inder Toor and Paramveer S. Toor of Chandigarh 6-4, 7-5, in the boys under-16 doubles while in under-18 group, he, in association with Navneet Kumar of Uttar Pradesh defeated the Chandigah duo of Garry Singh Amor and Raghav Singhal 6-3, 6-4. In the boys under-18 singles quarter-final match, Naveen Shanker upset top seeded Ashwani Kumar by 7-6 (6), 7-5. On the other hand, unseeded Garry Singh Amor continued his winning spree defeating eight seed Sidhant Solanki of Delhi with ease at 6-4, 6-1 in the event. Chandigarh, December 19 Air Cadre S.C. Luthra, Air Officer Commanding, 3 BRD, was the chief guest while his wife, Renu Luthra, gave away the prizes to the winners. Competitions were held in sack race, chatti race, lemon and spoon race, three-legged race, skipping, frog race etc. The mass PT display and the Rajasthani dance drew maximum applause. Air Commodore Luthra was all praise for the performance put up by the students and said such sports events were important for the all-round development of the students. Ranjana Bassi, principal of the school, read the report on the achievements of the school in sports while Updesh Kaur, headmistress, proposed the vote of thanks. |

Admn seals convent school
Ambala, December 19 Sub-divisional magistrate Mukesh Ahuja led a team of officials which took possession of Robert’s pavilion where the school was situated. Robert’s pavilion is an open ground which had been granted on lease to the BD Trust in 1915-16. A posse of police personnel were present to ensure that no untoward incident takes place. Members of the BD Trust strongly opposed the move to take possession of Robert’s pavilion. They claimed that the open ground, which is being utilised as a playground by students of BD school as well as Sacred Heart Convent, had been granted on perpetual lease to the trust. They stressed that no violation of the lease norms had taken place. Deputy commissioner, Ambala, Mohammad Shayin had ordered that Robert’s Pavilion should be put to community use. He had directed SDM Mukesh Ahuja to take possession of the land. The possession of Robert’s pavilion was taken since the lease period had expired. |

Varsity drops charges against teachers, students
Patiala, December 19 An emergency meeting of the Punjabi University syndicate, held under the chairmanship of vice-chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh, took some vital decisions with a view to restore conducive academic atmosphere on the campus. The meeting decided to withdraw administrative action taken against some of the teachers, employees and students in the larger interest of the university, following unanimous recommendations of the syndicate sub-committee headed by Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra. The vice-chancellor assured to redress all their genuine grievances within the framework of the given rules and regulations. While the meeting was held in appreciation of the valuable contribution of the outgoing syndics it also welcomed new members. Dr Jaspal Singh, after taking over as VC, had announced that the JAC had agreed to lift its six-month-long dharna on his assurance that the cases of alleged victimisation would be taken up for consideration and reviewed. |

BDPO held taking bribe
Patiala, December 19 BDPO Surinder Singh Dhillon
was arrested by Vigilance DSP Gurkirpal Singh on a complaint filed by Pritam
Singh of Patran. Pritam Singh had claimed that the BDPO had illegally auctioned village land and was demanding Rs 2.60 lakh from a person for transferring the same in his name. The BDPO was nabbed in the presence of two government witnesses Dr Jawahar Joshi and Som Nath, superintendent (grade 2) in the office of civil surgeon, Patiala. A case has been registered against the BDPO under various sections of the
Prevention of Corruption Act by the vigilance authorities. |
