City to have advanced hockey centre

Hockey will get a big boost in the city with the coming up of centre of excellence at Sports Complex, Sector 42 here.

The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) and the administration joined hands and signed an agreement initially for 10 years for setting up of the centre here. “The purpose of setting up the centre here is to prepare top class hockey players”, said IHF General Secretary K Jyothikumaran while talking to The Tribune.

“The people here love the game very much. We want to make the city as main hub of the game. Therefore, we decided to develop one full-fledged centre having advanced facilities for players”, said Jyothikumaran.

Secretary, Finance-cum-Sports, S.K. Sandhu has signed the agreement on behalf of the administration and general secretary Jyothikumaran on behalf of the IHF.

Joint director, Sports, Dr J.P.S. Sidhu said the selection of the players would be made by the IHF. “The modern sports science facilities, including physical fitness, mental fitness, bio mechanics, nutritions, video analysis and sports medicine, would be features of the centre. Besides experienced coaching staff, synthetic hockey fields and hi-tech gymnasium will also be provided.

The administration will provide additional artificial hockey field with floodlights and also adequate board and lodging facilities. The IHF will depute a foreign coach and one foreign physical trainer, along with two Indian assistant coaches for six months in a year and other coaching staff.

The Sector 42 complex has already one hockey ground having turf and floodlights.

Fun, frolic mark sports meet

Chandigarh, December 20
Saupin’s School, Sector 32, Chandigarh, organised its annual sports meet at the sports stadium, Sector 46, today. Regional officer, CBSE, D.R. Yadav was the chief guest.

School students took out a march past led by Ankita Juneja and Japesh Sharma (Class IX) on horses provided by the Chandigarh Horse Riding Society. The meet combined exercise with thrill and excitement. A number of track and field events were held. Races like sack, chatti, wheelbarrow and other relay and flat races were held.

Students displayed their skills in events like archery, gymnastics, aerobics and Choi-Kwang-Do. They also participated in the hoop drill and kaleidoscope drill.

The Saupin’s Community Service Organisation organised some special events in collaboration with the Government Institute for Mentally Retarded Children and ‘Samarth’, a residential school. The special students enthusiastically participated in the race and were given medals. The parents, guests and the school staff members also participated in various events.

The show was rocking with lively music to compliment each event. Avtansh was seen on the keyboard along with Maninder and Gurpyaar on the drums.

Ajay qualifies for AITA series

Ajay Yadav of Chandigarh qualified under-16 as well as under-18 in the boys category of the AITA Talent Series Tennis Tournament being played at the CLTA Tennis Stadium in Sector 10 here today.

Ajay beat Naveen Shankar, in the well-contested three sets 5-7, 7-6 (5), 7-5 in the semi-final encounter.

Maintainng his good form Ajay Yadav beat Kamal Kishore Maderana, in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 in the boys categories.

Ice games get under way

The Sadhana Society for mentally-challenged children organised ice games at Funcity here today. Various ice games like sledge on ice, slopy icy mountain, snow blizzard were held. The games will conclude on January 6. Dheeraj Punj, vice-president, said, “Funcity is pioneer in ice games and was the first one to introduce it in this region.”

Convent of Sacred Heart reopens

Ambala, December 20
Convent of Sacred Heart, which was locked up since it was running at Roberts Pavilion, was re-opened late last night. While B.D. Trust president Gyan Prakash stated that the school was functioning normally as usual, Ambala deputy commissioner Mohammad Shayin stated that the school had been allowed to function till the end of this academic session.

A press note issued by Gyan Prakash states “the locking incident which took place on December 19 at 11.30 am on our premises known as Robert Pavilion, where our Convent of Sacred Heart is running, was done by misunderstanding on the part of the local administration.”

“This has been clarified now to the complete satisfaction of the administration and deputy commissioner Mohammad Shayin, fully appreciating the situation, ordered the authorities to remove the lock and the school is functioning normally as usual,” the press note adds.

However, Shayin said the building and ground continued to be in the possession of the district administration. “Looking at the future of the students, we have allowed the school to function only till the end of this academic session,” he stated.
