New Delhi, December 22
Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh appears to have got a reprieve for now but his bete noire Narayan Rane also has something to cheer about with Congress president Sonia Gandhi assuring him that his “grievances” would be looked into.
Rane met Gandhi this evening, a day after he launched an open attack on the Chief Minister, cautioning the high command that Deshmukh’s continuance would spell doom for the party in the next polls. After his meeting, Rane made a back door exit from Gandhi’s residence avoiding waiting media persons but highly-placed party sources suggested that the high command was striking a balance between the Chief Minister and his detractors.
The sources said the grievances of Rane, who has been a prominent leader of the party, would be looked into even as they made it known that there were no immediate plans of any leadership change in the state. Today, he had a meeting with political secretary to Congress president Ahmed Patel prior to his talks with Gandhi. Rane also had a meeting with AICC general secretary Margaret Alva.
