Police takes on schoolgirls

Firozabad, December 22
The police today hit schoolgirls with batons and pulled them by their hair as they staged a demonstration here to protest the murder of their principal.

Nearly 100 students of S.R Gyaneshwari Higher Secondary School squatted on the national highway near the Asafabad crossing here this morning to protest the murder of Santosh Kumar Dhakra yesterday, school authorities said.

As the police arrived at the scene to clear the street of the protesters, boys ran away but the girls in the age group of 6 and 13 hung on, the sources said, adding the men in uniform resorted to lathicharge against the protesters and pulled them by their hair.

Three girls fell unconscious in the attack. Dhakra was shot dead by four armed assailants in his rented house last night. The district magistrate ordered an inquiry into the killing of the principal.

On December 4, owner of the school Subhash Chand Jatav, a lawyer, was murdered and yesterday’s incident is being regarded as in someway connected with it as both were good friends. — PTI
