Toll barrier has new address — Sutlej bridge
Ludhiana, December 24
In what comes as a Christmas gift to residents, the Doraha toll barrier, hated by the industry and the residents alike, will be shifted to the Sutlej bridge. It would start functioning from January 21 at the new location.

Silt mounds choking vegetation
Rara Sahib (Ludhiana), December 24
Irrigation department employees and sand mining contractors have dumped huge mounds of silt from the Abohar feeder canal on the forest area along the Doraha-Rara Sahib-Ahmedgarh road.

Sub-registrar goes on leave, staff follow suit

The stamp duty evasion scam cast its shadow on the sub-registrar’s (West) office today when sub-registrar Mukesh Sharma went on leave and employees followed suit, bringing the registration work to a halt.

Endurance test before start of athletics meet

Around 2,500 students from various schools of the district waited on empty stomach as the chief guest, MP Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, turned up two and half hours late to inaugurate the Punjab School Athletics Meet at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.

PAU’s distance learning classroom gets going

The facility of distance learning classroom installed in PAU college of agricultural engineering under American-Indian knowledge initiative with the technical cooperation from Iowa State University, USA, was made operational today.

Donated blood to be used for thalassaemics
Ludhiana, December 24
A blood donation camp was organised here yesterday. A team of doctors and supporting staff from the department of transfusion medicine at the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital provided facilities for the collection of blood.

Scrap atta-dal scheme: Forum
Ludhiana, December 24
Activists of the Public Anti-Corruption Forum today submitted a memorandum to the assistant commissioner, J.K. Jain, asking the state government to discontinue with the atta dal scheme as it had put a burden of Rs 350 crore on the state exchequer and the real beneficiaries were well-to-do families. The activists said certain persons close to political leaders were drawing the benefit while the deserving ones were not getting anything. 

Advance collection
Ludhiana, December 24
The Apex Chamber of Commerce and Industry today said there was a confusion pertaining to advance collection of deposit by the PSEB. Chamber president P.D. Sharma said the board chairman had agreed to postpone the implementation of the decision. However, industry is confused if decision is being implemented from January, 2008 or not.

Teachers to boycott seminars during vacation Jagraon, December 24 About 700 teachers from 103 government schools, including senior secondary and primary schools, today boycotted a seminar organised under the Sarb Sikhya Abhiyan at Government Senior Secondary School.

The district courts will remain closed from December 25 to 31. The district and sessions judge, G.K. Rai, has made arrangements for hearing urgent matters during vacation.

Cricket for Deaf Ludhiana bt Jalandhar Ludhiana, December 24 Allround performance by Surinder Singh (2 for 23 and 42 runs) enabled Ludhiana to register an easy six wicket win over Jalandhar in the cricket championship for the deaf being organised by the Deaf Cricket Federation, Punjab, at Arya College here today. Ludhiana won the toss and invited Jalandhar to bat first. In the allotted 20 overs, the visitors made 155 runs. The main scorers were Sandeep (39), Aman (25) and Harvinder (22). Ludhiana beat Jalandahr 10-4 and Amritsar outplayed Gurdaspur 3-0 in the men’s semifinals to set up the title clash in the 15th Senior Punjab State Softball Championship being played at Satish Chander Dhawan Government College here today.
