National School Games
Special exemption for aspirants from trials
G.S. Paul
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 26
National School Games aspirants can now have a sigh of relief. For the first time, the Chandigarh education department has chalked out a comprehensive policy for conducting trials before selecting the final team for the games.

The move comes in the wake of controversies that have erupted time and again before selecting the final team for national games.

To avoid any such controversy, the department has introduced a special provision of appeal for students who cannot appear for the trials on the specified date.

But, the provision can be utilised only once, provided the student possesses excellent record in the past, not more than six months old, in that discipline and has sought exemption in advance from the office of the DPI (S).

DPI (S) S.K. Setia said: “We had received representations wherein players could not appear for the selection trials as they were away for some bigger tournament, but were willing to participate in the national tournament. We have amended the policy to facilitate them to seek special exemption. After all, they are medal winners and ultimately dividends would be for Chandigarh only.”

This special gesture will also be extended to those outstanding sportspersons who miss the trials by reasons beyond their control like injury, etc.

The department has specifically clarified that such sportspersons can be asked to undergo retrial test or included in the preparatory camp directly, but their selection in the final team will be ascertained only after seeing their performance in the camp.

The performance of players will be observed by NIS-trained coaches, to be hired from the sports department of other states.

Under any circumstances, no one will be included in the team if they do not fulfil the laid down norms or fail to appear in the camp or indulge in misbehaviour or indiscipline.

Further, no ranking will be done at the first stage of trials and the final ranking or selection will be done only after the culmination of preparatory camp.

“In case experts from the sports department are not available, representatives of the association of the discipline concerned will handle the job.”
