Nepal ends monarchy
Bishnu Budhathoki writes from Kathmandu

Nepal, which was ruled by the Shah Dynasty for over 239 years, has been formally declared a federal, democratic republic effective from today following the interim Parliament endorsing a Bill to amend the interim constitution.

Of the total 321 members, 270 parliamentarians, the two-thirds majority of the interim parliamentarians, stood in favour of the Bill recently tabled by the government to amend the interim constitution, and the Speaker at Parliament declared that Nepal had been turned into a federal, democratic republic. However, the amendment would be implemented by the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly (CA) election.

However, Rastriya Prajatantra Party president Pashupati Shumsher Rana and his supporter Krsihan Pratap Malla, who were loyal to the royal palace in the past, including a member from a fringe Left party Pari Thapa, stood against the motion.

Following this decision, Nepal’s monarchy has been abolished constitutionally and politically. But it will be practically enforced only after the CA election. Speaker Nembang announced that the Bill, which was tabled by the government on Monday seeking to overcome constitutional hurdles to declare Nepal a federal democratic republic
