Postal dept to launch commercial banking

Ambala, December 30
The postal services department has decided to launch commercial banking in post offices.

K. Noorjehan, member, the postal service board, said the department had approached the Reserve Bank of India in this regard and asked for issuing a licence for commercial transactions.

She said as many as 67,000 post offices in the country would be computerised while 1,381 branches were already fully computerised.

She said the department was selling general insurance products through post offices in rural areas and it would start train-booking services across 30 post offices in the country from early next year.

Suvidha centres at village level soon

The state government has chalked out a plan to reach out to a wider section of the society by opening Suvidha centres at village levels that will provide them with computerised execution of various tasks. Chief secretary Ramesh Inder Singh stated this after he inaugurated the Citizens' Service Centre at the district headquarters here yesterday.

Deputy Commissioner Alakhnanda Dayal said the public would be able to get registries, affidavits, arms licences, passports, marriage registrations done at the service centre.

Besides, permission for holding of rallies, loud speakers and no objection certificates related to various government departments would also be issued from the centre, she said.

Army Sports Institute win A.K. Mishra title

Army Sports Institute won the over-all trophy with 36 points while the runners up trophy was given to Haryana with 22 points and Indian Navy won the 3rd position with 21 points in the 15th A.K. Mishra Memorial Boxing Championship being played the Skating Rink, Sector 10, here today.

Best Boxer was given to Ankit Thakur of Himachal Pradesh. Paramjeet Singh of Chandigarh was declared the best loser.

Chandigarh Boxing Association also honoured 10 Boxer who were medallists in the senior national.

They are: Harjinder Pal Singh (Sports Officer Education Board), Charanjeet Singh, Ranveer Singh, Paramjeet Singh, Mukesh, Ravi Katoch, Om Prakash, Naresh Kumar and Harish Bhardwaj.

Raj Kumar clinches title

Raj Kumar emerged as Mr Chandigarh (Junior) while Ajay Kumar bagged title of Mr Chandigarh (sub junior) in the 14th sub-junior body building championship held at DAV College, Sector 10, here today.

In the championship, being organised by the Chandigarh Amateur Body Building Association, over 100 body builders participated.

The chief guest H.S. Lucky, president of the Chandigarh Youth Congress gave away the prizes to the winners of all categories.

Hasan defeats Joanna, moves ahead

Hasan Danova defeated Joanna by 6-0 to move ahead in the second round of the girls’ under-14 category in the IIIrd St Peter’s Open Tennis Tournament being played at St Peter’s School, Sector 37, here today.

The other players, who moved ahead, were Harkirat, Ashima, Devina Aggarwal. Harkirat beat Karishma by 6-1 while Ashima and Devina drubbed Nikita (6-4) and Suvarna 6-5 (5).

Sansar shines in ICICI win

A fine performance by Sansar Bali (66 off 60 balls) enabled ICICI Bank to beat HFCL Connect in the 11th league match of the 8th Cry Cadence Corporate Cricket Challenge today.

The meet was held at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8-C.

HFCL Connect won the toss and elected to bat. They set a target of 143 runs after losing seven wickets. Arun Madan chipped in marvelous 66 runs off 70 balls. The ICICI team achieved the target in 23 overs and won the match by six wickets. Pankaj and Arash scored 32 and 20 runs, respectively. Sansar Bali of ICICI XI was given the man of the match award.
