Panjab University’s governing body, Syndicate, seems to have become an effortless short cut for students to seek admission to the university. After the infamous admission of Brinder Dhillon to the department of laws, which the Syndicate approved, now the department of computer science and applications abiding with the Syndicate decision had admitted a girl student in MCA (masters in computer applications) who completed her first semester in 2004 and left the course mid-way for migrating abroad.

The Administration seems to have developed cold feet on its ambitious proposal to make the city "plastic free" in view of the strong opposition from manufacturers, traders and industrialists.

UT keen to retain Bir as CITCO MD; returns Punjab panel
Chandigarh, January 31
The UT administration is keen to retain CITCO managing director J.S. Bir for another year. Returning the panel of officers, the Punjab government recently sent to replace Bir as CITCO MD, the UT administration has decided to let Bir continue on inter-cadre deputation with itself for a further period of one year beyond April 19 this year. Bir’s deputation with UT ends on April 19.

Shortcuts to six-pack abs fraught with health risks

Night temperature 6 degrees below normal
Chandigarh, January 31
The cold remained unsparing for the sixth day today, with minimum temperature settling at a low of 1.4° C, the lowest in a decade in Chandigarh. Like other parts of the northwestern zone where night temperature remained several degrees below normal, in Chandigarh it was six degrees below normal.

PGI fined Rs 5.8 lakh for negligence

Complying with the orders of the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, the State Consumer Disputes Commission has asked PGIMER, Sector 12, here to pay Rs 5.8 lakh for medical negligence.

College girl commits suicide

A 21-year-old girl committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan here this morning. A resident of Sector 10, the girl was a second-year engineering student of Indo global college at Mallanpur.

The owner of Shubham Hospital remained at large as the police remained busy in investigating his credentials and activities and studying his papers and bank accounts, here today. The police on a complaint of civil surgeon, Panchkula, sealed the hospital after raiding the hospital at Sector 20, while its owner, Sandip Sharma, had already left the spot.

As a part of its drive for socio-economic upliftment of the poor, the management of KBDAV, Sector 7, adopted 150 underprivileged from the slum settlement of Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, Chandigarh. The students were identified after a survey of the slum area with the help of Yuvsatta volunteers. Preference was given to girl child.

The budding artists of Sri Sukhmani International School, Dera Bassi, participated in National-level drawing competition by Lalit Kala Academy of Arts Education at Bangalore. Under the guidance of art and craft teacher Meena Vilkhoo, Yuvraj Kaushal of class III and Vikramjeet singh of class V got 2nd position, Rajan Minhas of class VI got 3rd position in the competition.

Additional district and sessions judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi today sentenced Harish and Sunil Chikna to life imprisonment for murdering Gunwant Singh Walia.

HC questions banquet hall on parking area
Chandigarh, January 31
Acting on a petition filed by a Zirakpur-based banquet hall against notices issued by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) for the removal of “unauthorised occupation”, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today expressed its desire to know how the petitioner could continue to arrange functions for 10,000 people when the parking area could accommodate just 500 vehicles.

Lawyers defer strike till Monday
Panchkula, January 31
Much to the relief of litigants as well as the administration, the lawyers after 11 days of their agitation at District courts, have decided to defer their strike till Monday, here today. The president of District Bar Association said the lawyers have decided to call off the strike at least for a few days so that the litigants do not suffer because of their agitation.

In view of the prevailing extreme weather conditions in the region; the district administration has ordered closure of all schools till February 2. In an order that was issued yesterday, deputy commissioner asked all the government, private and recognised schools to close down till February 2.

Resident looted, injured
Bassi Pathana, January 31
Two unidentified motorcycle-borne robbers looted and injured Rajiv Kumar, a goldsmith, last night, while he was returning to his house after closing his shop at Kheri Naudh Singh village. The robbers threw him in nearby fields and took way his motorcycle, mobile phone, cash and bag containing 50 gm gold, keys of the shop and other documents.

Journalists hold dharna
Rajpura, January 31
The Media Federation of North India, here, organised a dharna at the Sambhu border in support of their demands. Office bearers submitted a charter of demands seeking reservation for journalists in buses, trains and flights, exemption from toll tax on state and national highways, formation of district level accreditation and press relation committees, issuance of special stickers to the members of the media across the state by the government and fixing a quota for journalists in housing groups.

Violence in grain market, 6 held
Chandigarh, January 31
Six persons were arrested following a violent scuffle between private security guards of market committee in Sector 26 and fadiwalas over encroachment of land in the grain market here today. The violence continued for an hour in which a dozen men suffered minor injuries and created havoc in the market.

Film fest to show 6 international films
Chandigarh, January 31
Keeping in mind the international flavour of the Chandigarhians, international films to be screened during the Chandigarh Film Festival have been decided. Six international films in the festival are from France, Croatia, Hungary and Iran.
