Admin orders closure of schools till Feb 2

Ambala, January 31
In view of the prevailing extreme weather conditions in the region; the district administration has ordered closure of all schools till February 2.

In an order that was issued yesterday, deputy commissioner asked all the government, private and recognised schools to close down till February 2. However, as the missive could not be conveyed to all the schools well in time, some of the school held classes in the morning but were later closed.

Earlier, the district administration had asked the schools to delay the timing till 9.30 am to provide some relief to the school-going children. But as the weather continues to be cold, the administration decided to close the schools. Sources said in case the weather would not improve till February 2, the administration might extend the dates.

Primary classes shut till Monday

Panchkula: Keeping in view the intense cold wave in the region, the district administration has decided to declare holidays till Monday for the primary schools.

The timing of government schools in the district was delayed by 40 minutes, yesterday.

The deputy commissioner Rajinder Kataria said it has been ordered that classes up to 5 would not be held during the next two days and the students of these classes would attend the school from Monday. The orders would be implemented on private schools also, said Kataria.

Resident looted, injured

Bassi Pathana, January 31
Two unidentified motorcycle-borne robbers looted and injured Rajiv Kumar, a goldsmith, last night, while he was returning to his house after closing his shop at Kheri Naudh Singh village. The robbers threw him in nearby fields and took way his motorcycle, mobile phone, cash and bag containing 50 gm gold, keys of the shop and other documents.

The passers by heard his cries and admitted him in a private hospital.

Rajiv told The Tribune that last night when he reached the Bhakra Canal bridge at

Mehdoodan village, two unidentified youths on a motorcycle, one with covered face without turban and the other wearing a turban, stopped him and on gun-point

took him to a lonely place.

They started thrashing him with pistol buts and he fell unconscious. He said he

remained unconscious after that. Rajiv is undergoing a treatment at Kuldeep Hospital and is still under a shock.

Rajwinder Singh Sohal, DSP, Bassi Pathana, said police has registered case under Sections 392, 341, 506, IPC, and 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act.

Journalists hold dharna

The Media Federation of North India, here, organised a dharna at the Sambhu border in support of their demands. Office bearers submitted a charter of demands seeking reservation for journalists in buses, trains and flights, exemption from toll tax on state and national highways, formation of district level accreditation and press relation committees, issuance of special stickers to the members of the media across the state by the government and fixing a quota for journalists in housing groups.

President of the federation Jaspal Sharma said the federation was also seeking constitution of a wage board for the reporters to protect them against the exploitation by the media houses and providing free medical facility.

AITA Championship
City lad reaches final

Maintaining his winning spree, local player Digvijay Singh Naruka set the title clash with Vilash Khate in the boys U-14 singles of the All India Tennis Association Championship Series being held at Lake Club courts here today.

Naruka beat Sunny Dahiya of Haryana 6-4, 1-6, 2-6 while Vilash Khate crushed Rajasthan’s Kamal Kishore Maderana 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.

Another local player Ravnoor Kaur made her well-wishers proud as she moved into the finals of under-16 and under-14 doubles categories. In under -16, she will face Eetee Mehga of Gujarat, who also reached in the finals of under -14 singles category.

Earlier, Eetee finished the challenge of third seed Harnoor Kaur Mann of Chandigarh in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

The title-clash in the girls’ under-14 will be played between top seeded Likhita Shetty of Karnataka and second seed Eetee Mehta.

In the boys’ under-16 singles semi-final, Navneer Kumar of Uttar Pradesh defeated fifth seed Naveen Shankar of Chandigarh 6-2, 6-3. He will meet Punjab’s Gurinder Singh, who stunned second seed Maninder Singh of Haryana 6-3, 6-4 in the second semi-final.

Fifteen sportspersons were awarded at the fifth annual prize distribution function of Banyan Tree School at the school's premises here today.

BTS director Ravinder Talwar presented the mementos and merit certificates to the school students who had brought laurels to the city and to the school by their outstanding performance in various sports disciplines at the state, national and international competitions.

Simardeep Kaur, who won a bronze medal in the Karate Inter-School and 16th State Karate competitions, received the best player of the year award.

Violence in grain market, 6 held

Six persons were arrested following a violent scuffle between private security guards of market committee in Sector 26 and fadiwalas over encroachment of land in the grain market here today. The violence continued for an hour in which a dozen men suffered minor injuries and created havoc in the market.

Film fest to show 6 international films

Chandigarh, January 31
Keeping in mind the international flavour of the Chandigarhians, international films to be screened during the Chandigarh Film Festival have been decided. Six international films in the festival are from France, Croatia, Hungary and Iran.

All films are 35 mm in colour and will be screened in the Audi 1 of the Fun Republic.
