As violence continues to
rage in Jammu and Kashmir, the all-party meeting convened by
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today to discuss the situation
in the state unanimously decided to initiate an immediate
dialogue with the protesters in an effort to find a peaceful
solution to the Amarnath shrine land row issue.

Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) today tendered their
resignations to the Governor, who is also chairman of the
board, in view of the prevailing situation over the land
transfer issue in the state.

Man killed in
Kathua firing
Jammu, August 6
Even as the focus shifts to New
Delhi, where the Centre is taking initiatives to resolve the Amarnath
land row, there is no let up in violence in the Jammu region. In Kathua,
one person was killed and two others injured when the Army reportedly
opened fire at a group of youths, who attacked trucks heading to Kashmir
at Palli Morh in the curfew-bound district.

suspended an anti-terror tribunal ruling that had lifted the ban on the

firing, third in two weeks
Srinagar, August 6
Army posts in the Nowgam sector of
Kupwara came under fire from across the Line of Control (LoC) today.
Army spokesperson Lt-Col A.K. Mathur said the fire was for a short
duration and they could not ascertain as to whether the Pakistan army
was behind the incident. However, no damage was reported.

President Pervez Musharraf today decided to go ahead with his visit to
China to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympics Games, hours after
abruptly cancelling his scheduled departure to Beijing amid political
efforts to impeach him. The foreign office initially announced that
Musharraf had cancelled his scheduled visit this morning due to
“developments at home”.
Amarinder
to lead campaign in Punjab
New Delhi, August 6
The Congress today tactfully handed
over the most important task of fighting the forthcoming Lok Sabha
elections in Punjab to Capt Amarinder Singh, thus marking the return of
the former Chief Minister to the forefronts of Punjab politics.
Amarinder will head the campaign committee of the Congress, while the
party retained Mohinder Singh Kaypee as the working president of the
party in the state.
