An official spokesman has denied Indian and US media reports that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had confirmed the arrest of Lashkar-e-Taiba operative Zarar Shah. The Prime Minister’s House, in a statement, said the reports were ‘baseless’, adding that Gilani ‘did not issue any such statement.’
Shah is accused by India of arranging funds for the terrorists who attacked Mumbai on November 26. The Mumbai police claimed that Shah had also talked to some of the attackers via satellite telephone. The Wall Street Journal had reported that at least one top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) leader, Zarar Shah, captured in a raid by Pakistani authorities early this month had confessed to the group’s involvement in the attack.
“He is singing,” an unidentified Pakistani security official told the newspaper, referring to Shah. Shah's admission was backed up by the US intercepts of a telephone call between Shah and one of the attackers during the assault, the security official told the newspaper.
Shah reportedly told interrogators that he was one of the main planners of the assault and had spoken to the attackers during the rampage to give them advice and keep them focused, the newspaper cited a second source familiar with the investigation as saying.
