Jeev's portrait unveiled at Golf Club
Chandigarh, January 3 Accompaying Jeev was his wife Kudrat and his parents Milkha Singh and Nirmal Milkha Singh. For Jeev it was a dream come true. Yes, it was on the Chandigarh greens that he slogged it out hoping to make it big. Braving the biting cold, members continued to drive in occupying every parking space in the club to cheer the Chandigarh golf icon, who clinched the Asian Golf crown for the second time in three years and occupied the 36th place in the world golf ranking. The golf enthusiasts could not have asked for more. They were honouring a sportsman who had brought Chandigarh on the golf map of the world. Although the Chandigarh Golf Association was the first to honour Jeev at the CGA Golf Range, the delay on the part of Chandigarh Golf Club was because the club wanted to make it a big affair, complete with a life-size portrait of their most treasured member. According to club president SD Bains the decision to honour Jeev was taken at the club's managing committee meeting on December 19. It was also decided to install a life-size portrait of Jeev at an appropriate place so that budding golfers from the region could get inspiration from his life-size portrait every time they passed by the reception. Bains talked of the wonderful qualities that Jeev possesses. He appealed to Jeev to guide the club in improving the layout of fairways and greens. He was also hopeful that Jeev would help the club get some major international tournaments. Jeev gave his best performance this year finishing in the top 10 in a major. To be precise it was ninth position. This was, besides his second Asian crown in three years. Jeev took to golf at a young age and won his first major title at the age of 13. That was the British Aerospace Juniors at Delhi Golf Club. This got him a three-month coaching stint in England. After that there was no looking back. He has been a competitive golfer from the very beginning. Those who have played with him in the late eighties will vouch for it. HC Sethi, who handles the media, said he had the opportunity of playing with Jeev. He was happy that he was leading over the young golf icon in 1986. Seeing the smile on Sethi's face, Jeev said, "The last putt is still to be played." This has been the forte of Jeev “To fight till the last hole or even the last putt.” |
