Police cracks murder case, arrests three
Patiala, January 10 The SSP said the police had arrested Sukhmanpreet Singh, Sidaqpreet Singh and Kanwaljit Singh who had confessed to their involvement in the murder of Gorkha whose body was later dumped in the PSEB colony, near Rajpura colony. Asthana added that all the three arrested had also confessed their involvement in various incidents of snatching, theft and burglary. The team members had waylaid Gorkha with an intention to rob him of his valuables and cash, but after depriving him of these goodies, they murdered him. The SSP claimed that on the same night when Gorkha was murdered the three accused also looted three people of their valuables in the Rajpura colony area. A week after murdering Gorkha, the gangsters allegedly snatched a mobile phone from Dalip Kumar posted as Lance Naik. After fleecing the Army man, the accused injured him with sharp-edged weapons when he tried to put up a fight. The same night, the three meticulously planned the robbery of Amarjit Singh, a resident of Jhujhar Nagar. After threatening him with a knife, the robbers decamped with a mobile phone, a laptop and Rs 14,000 in cash. The SP (detective), claimed that with the arrest of these three, the mystery behind the spate of robberies, which had rocked the city during the last two months, had been solved. However, he added, two members of the same gang were still at large and the police was raiding various hideouts in the city following the information gathered from the accused. |

505 boxes of liquor seized
Dera Bassi, January 10 According to the police, they received information that two trucks containing liquor had left Chandigarh. In an attempt to nab them, the police set up a naka on Ramgarh-Mubarikpur road and intercepted the truck containing 300 boxes of English liquor. The truck was moving towards to Delhi. The local police has arrested driver Jarnail Singh, a resident of Macchiwara, and cleaner Sukhdev Singh, a resident of Nawanshahar. Sources revealed another naka was set up on a tip off. The police stopped a vehicle near Kakrali village in Dera Bassi. The police recovered a total of 205 boxes of liquor from the possession of the accused. They were supplying the illegal liquor to Faridabad. The police has arrested driver Surinder Singh hailing from UP and cleaner Altaf, a resident of Faridabad. According to SHO, Dera Bassi, Dalbir Singh Grewal, “We had an information that liquor would be smuggled from Chandigarh to the other neighbouring states so we laid check posts on highway.” He said the vehicles were impounded and a case under the Excise Act was registered against the accused. Fatehgarh Sahib: The police here today seized 264 illicit liquor bottles during a ‘naka’ laid near Sirhind. The accused managed to flee from the scene and left the car in which they were carrying the illicit liquor. The police officials said the liquor was being smuggled from Chandigarh to various parts of Punjab. The accused were carrying the liquor bottles in an SUV. A case in this connection has been registered at Sirhind police station. Police is still investigating the matter. |

Man accuses police of inaction
Kalka, January 10 Madan told The Tribune that the duo had made an attempt to set his house on fire. According to the police, Madan has lodged a complaint that he had received a phone call from Sanjay Chauhan November 4, 2008, threatening that if he did not close his house window towards the house of Pawan Sharma, his house would be set on fire. He said in the early morning hours, he noticed that some oil-like black liquid in abundance was poured on the back wall of his house. Madan further alleged that the local police, instead of arresting the accused, had also imposed a fabricated case against him. He said Pawan Sharma was manipulating the local police due to his political influence. |

MC to spend Rs 1 cr on road repair
Bassi Pathana, January 10 The MC president Kulbhushan Malhotra, today said the council would repair all the roads of various localities of the town besides laying new roads. Lamenting the lack of basic infrastructure and shortage of permanent employees he said, “There is no permanent EO, JE and accountant and there is acute shortage of safai karamcharis in the council and at present there are only 18 safai karamcharis and we need at least 60”, he said. We had demanded a big project for the area so that it could be developed like other areas of the district. He said the population of the area is decreasing due to lack of basic amenities. MC owes Rs 19 lakh to the PSEB and it had disconnected the electricity supply three months ago. The electricity was resumed after MC submitted Rs 3 lakh with the PSEB. He said the tube well of the area is lying unused for past long time due to lack of funds. He however, said Rs one crore would not serve any other purpose except for re-carpeting the roads of different localities of Bassi Pathana. |

Shooting suspect gets police remand
Dera Bassi, January 10 The Zirkapur police arrested him yesterday near local hotel located on the Zirakpur-Panchkula highway. The police said that he was involved in shooting Satwinder Singh, an 18-year-old school student. Satwinder was seriously injured after some unidentified youths had fired at him in Green city, located on the Zirakpur-Panchkula highway. Sources in the police said the assailants had been paid Rs 75,000 to shoot the victim over some
petty issue. The assailants had escaped on a motorcycle after injuring him. A case of attempt to murder had been registered at Zirakpur. The police said the other suspects involved would be arrested soon. |

Chandigarh, January 10 The petitioner, Ripudaman Singh, stated in the petition that he got a credit card issued from Axis Bank on December 7, 2007. He never used the card but an account statement sent by the bank for period between December 18, 2007 and February 15, 2008 showed due payment of Rs 4,167 for the alleged purchase of a Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Health Cover Policy for Rs 2 lakh on January 28, 2008. The complainant claimed that he never purchased the policy. On February 25, he sent a letter to the bank and on March 1 sent a fax to the manager, health insurance department, Bajaj Allianz. On March 4, he also lodged a complaint with Axis Bank customer care centre but no action was taken. He claimed receiving threatening calls on his mobile. He claimed of receiving bloated credit card account statements continuously and the amount “due” toward him had crossed Rs 6,000 from Rs 4,161 in six months. In its written reply the bank stated that as per practice the insurance policy was issued only when the petitioner agreed to a request by a person and the insurance agency maintained it own video record for that. |

Chandigarh, January 10 The notice was issued on a petition by councillor Kuljit Singh Bedi. His counsel Ranjivan Singh asserted that the elections to these posts were last held on August 17, 2006. Fresh elections were due on August 16, next year. But the state authorities, on one pretext or the other, kept delaying the matter. In another matter, the Division Bench of Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur and Justice Hement Gupta reserved orders on two separate writ petitions challenging the delimitation of Nangal and Patran Municipal Councils. The delimitation has been challenged mainly on the ground of failure to rotate reservation. |

Man gets life term for murder
Chandigarh, January 10 According to the prosecution, Bhagwan Dass was a hawker and used to sell “chana-kulcha” on streets. The accused was known to Rajbir. During a raid conducted by the Estate Officer, a team took away utensils of Rajbir who had borrowed money from Bhagwan, which he returned the next day. Thereafter, on December 27 Bhagwan went to Rajbir’s house and asked him for the money again. Bhagwan forcibly took away Rs 1,000 from Rajbir. Nanhi objected to this following which the amount was returned after another person, Rashipal, reprimanded Bhagwan Dass. Bhagwan held a grudge and on December 28, 2006, he reached the house of Rajbir in an inebriated state and set Nanhi ablaze after locking her in a room. Rajbir reached the room and tried to save her but she sustained 90 per cent burns and was taken to the GMCH-32. Nanhi died in the hospital on January 3, 2007. However, before her death, her dying declaration was recorded. |

Chandigarh, January 10 According to the police, the case pertained to 2004 when the rape victim and her husband were allegedly involved in a case being investigated by the police in which they were acquitted. The complainant, not satisfied with the police investigation, approached the CBI. The CBI appointed Kundu and Mahinder to investigate the charges. Fearing arrest, the husband of the victim fled. The two officers then approached the woman and allegedly offered to go slow with the investigation in return for sexual favours. |

Chandigarh, January 10 Stolen
Kul Bhushan, a resident of Sector 37, lodged an FIR alleging that unidentified persons have stolen two gas cylinders from his house, yesterday. A case has been registered in this regard.
Fake documents
A resident of Sector 18, Anil Kumar, filed a complaint with the police alleging that Lakhwinder Kaur of Kapurthala took a mobile connection from him by producing fake documents. A case under Sections 420, 467, 468, 469, 471 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 19 police station.

The police has registered a case against Reliance World, Sector 35, for not maintaining the register of customer’s identification. The case has been registered against the company and it’s manager under Section 188 of the IPC at police station-36. |

Indira Colony resident stabbed
Chandigarh, January 10 The accused, Ashu, reportedly stabbed Anil in the morning. The victim was taken to the PHC, Mani Majra, where he was stated to be out
of danger. An eyewitness said the accused apparently had an old rivalry with the victim as he snatched away the mobile phone of injured. A case has been registered under Sections 324, 379 of the IPC in this regard. Efforts are on to nab the accused. |

Chandigarh, January 10 Anil Kumar, the victim, lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Mewa Singh of Chandigarh, Kulwinder Kaur of Kurukshetra and Rajesh Kumar took Rs 5.8 lakh from him in lieu of providing a job to his ward in the public health department. However, they neither arranged the job, nor returned the money. The police has registered a case under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC at the police station-31. The economic offences wing of the UT police is investigating the matter. |
