Blight Attack
Rajpura/Sirhind, January 11 According to farmers, late blight has affected their crop around 15-20 days back. "The blight has taken over the entire fields and has completely damaged the green leaves of potatoes and also affected potatoes," said Gurdarshan Singh of Rajpura. He said he had sown potatoes in 13 acres of land and now 4 acres have completely been damaged due to blight attack. Despite repeated use of various kinds of pesticides and taking all other measures, the disease was still spreading in fields, he added. He said the use of chemicals had hit the farmers hard. "We end up spraying pesticides worth from Rs 1,000 to 1,500 per acres," he said. Villages Khaspur, Mathiara, Buta Singh Wala, Jangpura, Gharama and Hulka, Mauvi, Karala and that of Sirhind, Amloh, Khanna and its adjoining areas have reported the potato blight. The farmers said it was for the second time that the blight had attacked during the past three months. They also said they were selling potatoes at a cost of Rs 165 per quintal and were earning only Rs 100 out of it. Rest of the money was being spent over transpiration and other expenses for selling the fruit. As per experts, the late blight can destroy entire potato crop within a week under the favourable weather conditions. The disease gets passed on to the seeds stored for next season, rendering farmers bereft of not only the crop but the seeds also. The agriculture-department officials said the farmers had been advised to ensure that the potato tubers kept for seed purpose should make free from infection. "They must remove the infected tubers from the seed lots before sowing," said the Chief Agricultural Officer at Fatehgarh Sahib, Sarabjit Singh Kandhari. He said farmers of Amloh area had grown maximum potatoes in the district. He admitted that blight had affected the crop. |
