Panicky, farmers reap wet crop
Ludhiana, April 12 Not heeding to the advice, the farmers have started reaping the crop manually since it is not possible for the combine harvesters to carry out operations as the fields are still wet. Though in some fields that were relatively dry, combines have been put to operations. After continuous rain in the past, the experts had advised the farmers to wait for some time as the wheat harvested now would have problems of moisture content. It would be a hindrance in the smooth procurement. Not bothering about this valuable piece of suggestion, the farmers have started cutting the crop. In the Mullanpur Dakha belt on the Ludhiana-Jagraon road, many fields were undergoing harvesting operations. The farmers said they had already suffered due to rains. The weather had become so unpredictable that they were fearing more rains. One more similar spell of rain would render the grains meant for cattle alone, said farmer Iqbal Singh of Shekhupura village. He said it was better to make do with whatever was available to them. Rest would be seen later on. He harvested his entire fields and said he knew he would face problems in procurement. ‘‘If they will send my produce back, I will keep it at home only. It will suffice for my family and servants for two years,’’ said Iqbal, while showing the crop that had turned black after rains. Harvesting operations were seen in Gurreh, Mullanpur Dakha, Pandori and other villages. Jasbir Singh Sekhon, a botanist of Chhappar village, said he had also seen these operations in a number of villages. He said the farmers did not know what they were doing. By reaping the crop wet, its shelf life would decrease, there would be a nutrient imbalance and threat if fungus and other microbes during storage. |

Dog menace hounds residents
Ludhiana, April 12 For the past so many years the MC had been passing the buck by citing one or another reason, trying to cover its incompetence to tackle the issue seriously, as a result of which the general public had become a harassed lot. Despite repeated reporting and several memorandums submitted by NGOs urging the civic body to bail out residents from the increasing canine fear, the corporation apparently could not do anything except being a mute spectator. Even change of political and official reigns had failed to bring any difference as far as dogs were concerned. Talking to The Tribune, Ruchi Kapoor said, “It is difficult to move even at public parks in our surroundings due to fear of dogs. My four-year-old daughter fears dogs because few days back she had a narrow escape from a dog attack. After the incident we have stopped going to the parks.” She added that if the street dogs in the city could not be killed, they could at least be sterilised. She complained that dogs were causing problem for senior citizens too. Another resident Dheeraj said, “It is an irony that despite having a veterinary university like GADVASU we are searching for a solution outside the city. The MC officials could easily rope in veterinary students and take their help by either providing them with funds or giving them dog sterilisation materials like injections and kits.” Adding he said that, “The most disappointing attitude of the officials was that they don’t look around to find a solution and talk about far off things which are time-consuming and needs lot of funding.” Despite repeated attempts, joint commissioner BK Gupta could not be contacted. |

Gate gains weight in Kitchlu Nagar
During the earlier assembly elections, residents were up in arms against Vice-Chancellor KS Aulakh over the closure of gate. The gate was finally opened for the residents after the orders of current Vice-Chancellor Prof MS Kang. In the past, the politicians had never missed an opportunity to cash in on this issue. They always maintained that if voted to power, they would get the PAU gate opened for the residents. The same tactic had also been applied by politicians in parliamentary elections. Due to the ongoing gate controversy, the residents of Kitchlu Nagar have divided into two factions. While one group is supporting the installation of gate, another is opposing the move. Recently, when the Municipal Corporation demolished the gates erected by the residents, it snowballed into a political issue. Now, the residents say they will only vote for the candidate who ensures permanent installation of the gates in their respective areas. Virinder Bhakoo, president of the Kitchlu Nagar Residents' Association, has complained that residents of F-Block are openly flouting the High Court order that prohibits the installation of gate by the residents. Bhakoo, who was a BJP loyalist, shifted to the Congress over this issue. Cases of loot and snatching are on a rise in this area. Recently, a chopped body of a woman was also found in a trunk, which created panic among the residents. The residents also complained of traffic congestion in the street. |

City Concerns
A Majority of the promises made during the election campaign turn out to be ones that are never kept. The bulk of election manifesto and speeches holds ground only during the election process.
Do you remember the big election promises for changes or improvement in Ludhiana made by different candidates who became Members of Parliament in the past? Do you remember any major projects mentioned in the campaign material that were completed? Can you make suggestions for a better accountability of the big election promises made to the voters? Responses, in not more than 200 words, can be emailed to ludhianaconcerns@tribunemail.com or sent to our city office at Bhadaur House, Ludhiana. |
Maths teachers sore over delay in report
Jagraon, April 12 He said after the ACP report, the concerned teacher is liable for one extra grant from its passing, but the DEO intentionally raise objections repeatedly just to delay the increment. He said the annual confidential report of the teachers should also be considered before asking explanations from him. He further said the result of students, especially in mathematics was very poor and the DPI had issued show-cause notices to the teachers, whose students performed poorly in the annual examinations of session 2005-06. He further said the poor results were due to the wrong polices of the government as teachers were kept busy in non-teaching jobs. Moreover, vacant posts, wasting time of teachers in keeping records, unnecessary seminars, passing in mathematics not made compulsory were also the causes behind the poor results. He said soon they would seek a meeting with the DEO for the redressal of their issues. |

Election fever grips city
Ludhiana, April 12 Galib has opened his office in Bhaibala Chowk. He organised a big rally and Bikramjit Singh
Majithia, former minister, was the chief guest. The rally attracted leaders from all over the district. Local BJP leaders and legislators, including Rajinder
Bhandari, state BJP president, Sat Paul Gosain, Deputy Speaker, Vidhan
Sabha, and Harish Bedi MLA, were present in the rally. Manish Tewari has also intensified his campaign and local leaders have started working for him. Tewari seeks votes on secularism and achievements of the Manmohan Singh government. Candidates of the Akali Dal and the Congress are not raising the issue of political corruption. While voters are sore on the silence of the two over corruption, unemployment and population explosion, the “aam
admi” has not yet shown much interest in the electioneering. The local residents are just watching the
“tamasha”. Ludhiana has suffered a lot so far as the development of the city is concerned and particularly during the Congress regime, the city received the maximum setback. The Municipal Corporation had a commissioner, who was a protégé of Amarinder Singh and his media adviser BIS
Chahal. He was more concerned about looking after the interests of his masters. Likewise, since the formation of the
SAD-BJP government, no worthwhile steps were taken to stem the rot set in during the Congress regime. Prakash Singh
Badal, Chief Minister did not hold a single meeting to discuss the development plan. It was only during December, 2008, and January and February, 2009, that he held sangat darshan and distributed grants to local legislators for the development. At present, the biggest problem faced by Ludhiana is the problem of vehicular traffic. With the increase in vehicles, the smooth regulation of traffic has become a big problem. The traffic situation is becoming worse and not a day passes without a serious road accident. The Bahujan Samaj Party has announced to hold a rally at Ludhiana on April 28, which will be addressed by UP Chief Minister
Mayawati. |

‘Coffee House’ team in city
The thought of oneness, as per the director, has always been a frightening factor for the political forces in the country. The film might change one’s perspective. So many people visit coffee house regularly, but there may not be any similarity in them. They develop a sort of relation with each other. This closeness amongst each other generates a kind of concern for
each other. Slowly, the Coffee House crowd starts realising that just sitting in the coffee house and simply discussing
the issues relating to self and the nation lead nowhere. Interestingly, the movie has tried to explore all these simple incidents. “A series of events make this Coffee House different from the others. Here the ideas start taking practical shapes and a new beginning is made. The film has feelings,
humour, pain and joy. Various incidents in the story make the various characters realise their commonality which is nothing but Indians,” adds
Grewal. Aman Dhaliwal said the film is about a coffee house and groups of different people who have a sort of relation with each other. The film is directed and written by Gurbir Singh
Grewal. Gurbir has directed more than 15 TV serials, including the popular serial “Neem Ka
