A creative way to teach THE Montessori concept of education is finding more and more adherents in North India, particularly in Punjab. Chandigarh has been familiar with this concept for a while, though when it was introduced in the country about a century ago, it remained limited to South India. However, it has now caught the attention of education experts, and Montessori teaching is used in 52 countries, with the USA taking the lead. The Montessori method helps children learn naturally. The primary focus is to treat each child as a unique individual. This allows children to learn at their own pace. The goals and outcome among Montessori students are similar to those in conventional schools, but the experience is stress free for children, parents and educators. The secret of education lies in respecting the child and to prepare and groom him or her for all kinds of challenges in life. It strives to provide real-life experience that cultivates the child’s sense of independence, self-esteem and love for peace. The benefits of authentic Montessori methodology have been refined further into a blended curriculum to give an extra edge to students while meeting the aspirations of the traditional education system. Interestingly, sensing its importance the Tamil Naidu government has already introduced this method in its government schools and other states are planning to introduce the same shortly. With a vision to be a global leader in child development through the empowerment of children, the concept believes in cultivating a child’s sense of independence, self-esteem and love for peace in its own unique way. Aiming to help children in their most important years, i.e., from birth to 6 years, the Montessori method encourages and allows children to do anything that interests them and focuses on the development of their five senses. The role of a teacher in this scenario is to inspire and nurture curiosity and help the children to accomplish their tasks themselves. The children of different ages are allowed to work in the same room thereby encouraging them to interact and help each other. Montessori preschools all over the world use scientifically designed identical equipments with which the children work. The concept believes that education is the chief defence of the nation. The secret of education lies in respecting the child and to prepare and groom him or her for all kinds of challenges in life. It strives to provide real-life experiences that cultivate child’s sense of independence, self-esteem and love for peace. It promotes global perspective among the students and promises to leave no stone unturned in transforming children into future pillars of family, society and nation. The concept aims to encourage children to realise their true potential, to make children learn and develop a joy in learning and to prepare children to be life-long learners by developing their skills as academic achievers. Currently, ABC Montessori, a part of GCS Group, based in Chandigarh is adopting Montessori education in the region. Bhupindra International Public School was opened at Patiala in 2004, followed by a second school at
Greater Noida. “The Montessori concept of education that our school follows is time-tested, well researched and universally acclaimed system,” says Ms Indu Sharma, principal, Bhupindra International Public School (BIPS). “Though it is 101 years old, it has not been surpassed till date by any other system of education. The system provides numerous opportunities for ‘hands on’ and ‘minds on’ rich and fulfilling experiences.” Admissions to Pre-School start at the age of a year and a half up to six years depending on the class in which the child is enrolled.

Ensure regular study routine THE tension of parents is over as their wards have got admissions to the schools chosen for them. The school authorities have also heaved a sigh of relief as the admission process is over. The distribution of the syllabus for the entire academic year has been chalked out followed by the assessment procedures. High-structured preplanning of the entire curriculum has taken place and the unit construction by the teachers has been completed. Finally, the new academic session has begun in earnest. Children at the school level are introduced to formal learning. As the teaching-learning process progresses, they are exposed to a lot of information. They assimilate a lot of the knowledge and can mediate complex mental activities. When the young scholars are bombarded with a lot of information, they cannot retain everything. Retention power has its limits. Students have overall integrative control over their mental faculties and have to do regular study to keep in pace with the classroom teaching in school. Most schools follow a regular evaluation programme where the progress of the child is evaluated. Some private schools follow the practise of conducting weekly tests, namely the Monday or Wednesday tests which ensure that the child is in regular touch with his studies. Some teachers conduct the surprise test to judge how much the child has comprehended in class. A systematic study plan has to be followed by the young scholar in order to face the ongoing competition in the class and pressure of studies. While studying such a vast syllabus and so many subjects, one of the best coping strategies is regular self-study. If a child comes home and goes through the lessons that have been taught to him in school, he reduces chances of burdening himself with extra work when the examinations approach. Students avoid regular study and this leads to increased anxiety and stress near exam time. All boarding schools have the mandatory “prep time” which is a part of the school’s daily routine that inculcates the habit of regular self-study. All educators advise their charges to be regular in their studies so as to avoid mental fatigue when the exams approach. During the exams, the entire syllabus has to be covered in a short span of time and only if the student has been in constant touch with his studies can he cope up with the subject matter. Tejbir Brar whose son Ishaan is a new student of UKG at St. John’s, Chandigarh, states that there are no particular books being followed. Rather colourful worksheets sheets are given and for the progress of the child full participation of the parents is needed. She adds, “The parents need to guide the child in his work. If parents ensure that the child does regular work since the beginning, he will follow it as a matter of routine when he grows up. Cursive single alphabets are being taught to my son at school and I make it a point that he sits and practices at home.” Jaskanwaljit Kaur, a teacher, whose son Sahil Sidhu is a student of Class XII, aptly says, “Success cannot be attained in a day. In order to have a bank balance, one has to save pennies in order to convert them into pounds. The same applies to studies where a small regular input can help one achieve high scores”. Regular studies have to be done from the start of the session as this reduces the pressure on the student. Parents and teachers should also ensure that regular study work is introduced into the child’s routine at an early age, so that he develops self-monitoring to direct his entire academic career.
