Cyclist killed in accident:
A cyclist was hit by a speeding car at Timberpur village here today and the car driver fled. Passersby took him to a nearby civil hospital and he was referred to the PGI, where he succumbed to injuries. According to police, the deceased, identified as Teja Singh of Nand Pur Kalour village, was going on his cycle to attend the cremation of his relative at Isher Hel village.

Home Secy inspects Kajauli waterworks: Home Secretary Ram Niwas inspected the Kajauli waterworks along with Additional Commissioner PK Sharma, Chief Engineer SK Bansal, SE, Public Health, RK Goyal, XENs of public health division RS Bedi and RS Ahluwalia, and other officers of the municipal corporation here today. The Chief Engineer told the Home Secretary that 87 MGD water was being provided by the Bhakra Main Canal while 20 MGD water was being provided through underground tube wells in the city. The Home Secretary also inspected facilities in Sectors 37 and 39.

PU reader on US research panel: Dr Rajeev K Puri, reader in the department of physics, Punjab University, has been selected by the research society' American Physical Society (APS) on the panel of referee's for evaluating research work submitted for the journals of the society.  Dr Puri, a nuclear scientist, is a post doctorate from Germany and France. He has been invited for the commonwealth fellowship, UK, national scientific research fellowship, USA, Denmark and Russia. He has published around 280 research papers in international journals.

Singing contest: Yaadgar-e-Rafi Society, Chandigarh, will hold the first round of singing competition for Best Singer Award-2009 on May 10, 2009, at the Punjab Kala Bhawan, Sector 16, Chandigarh, at 8 am for junior and senior in male and female categories. Male participants will sing Mohd Rafi songs and female Lata Mangeshkar’s or Asha Bhosle’s. The awards will be given at the society’s annual function in December. Yoga camp today:
The yoga training is being organised for the general public tomorrow at Shiv Mandir, Badal Colony, Zirakpur. This camp will be organised under the guidance of Yogacharya Balvinder Kumar. Yogic postures, pranayama and meditation will be the part of the training camp.

1 killed in mishap:
Suman of Makwal was knocked to death by a negligently driven tractor in the Ghou Manhasan area near here. The body was later shifted to Government Medical College. In a separate incident, the police found the body of an unidentified man from a nallah near Luthra Academy in the Talab Tillo area.

Counselling for students:
A Chandigarh-based educational institute will hold a two-day career counselling camp for students in the state on May 8 and 9. A statement issued by Aryans Business School has said the students who want to make a career in professional courses like MBA, MCA, BBA and BCA among others courses could participate in the counselling, which would be held on its premises on the Chandigarh-Patiala highway.

Jawan found shot dead: An Army jawan was found shot dead at a forward post near LoC in Uri on Saturday. The police said Darshan Singh, who was with 3 RR, was found dead with bullet injuries under suspicious circumstances. However, the police evidently believed he committed suicide.
