Chandigarh, May 4
Two students did the state proud as they scripted success in the Civil Services Examination. While Sharanjit Kaur Brar was placed second, Virender Sharma was the topper among boys and was placed fourth in the overall merit list. Sharma, who appeared as a physically challenged candidate, has another commendable first to his credit. He is the first candidate to appear in the Civil Services with Punjabi as the medium and make it to the merit list.

Brar belongs to a family of farmers from a Bathinda village. Following her schooling at Bathinda’s St Joseph’s School, she shifted to Chandigarh for further studies. A postgraduate in psychology from Panjab University, Brar is undergoing training in Shimla after being selected to the All-India Audit and Accounts Services.

Sharma, who belongs to Sangrur, is an alumnus of PEC and is currently serving as a PCS officer in UT Food and Civil Supplies Department. He credits his success to Punjabi Tribune of which he has been an avid reader. It is the literary write-ups and extensive vocabulary that he build up by reading the paper that stood him in good stead. Sharma’s success is a milestone in the revival of Punjabi language and his achievement is bound to motivate many aspirants to appear in Punjabi medium.
