Ludhiana, May 12
Police, busy maintaining law and order, today expressed its inability to book miscreants who beat up a Tribune team late last night and escaped with the camera. The SSP, Dr Sukhchain Gill, told a delegation of the media that action would be taken after the election and sought two days’ time to bring the culprits to book.
The incident took place near Ghaamandi chowk when the team of two reporters and a photographer spotted some political workers consuming liquor on the road in defiance of the ban in force. The sight of the photographer and the camera provoked the miscreants into hurling bottles at the car. The photographer and one of the reporters was beaten up badly though the hooligans spared the female reporter in the team.
The miscreants smashed the flash bulb and fled with the camera. In the meanwhile they removed the number plate of the Lancer they were moving in. The reporter confined inside the car called up all the emergency numbers but in vain. The police control room asked her for details and the police arrived only after the miscreants had fled and after a media person called up the highway patrol.
A large number of onlookers were present on the spot, eating and drinking in the open. None of them ventured to help.
