Former judge convicted
Quantum of sentence today

The CBI Special Court today convicted Surinder Singh Bhardwaj, former Judicial Magistrate (First Class) in a corruption case that had shook judiciary.

The stalemate between the UT administration and the Punjab and Haryana High Court over the appointment of legal remembrancer (LR) today ended with the name of Haryana judicial officer Sant Prakash being cleared for the post.

Case transferred to special cell
Chandigarh, May 15 The police has transferred the investigation of the murder of the owner of Sham Fashion Mall, Amarjit Singh, to the special crime investigation cell (SCIC).

Sample tests negative for swine flu
Chandigarh, May 15
The UT health authorities today heaved a sigh of relief after the samples of a 30-year-old pregnant woman, suspected to be suffering from swine flu, were found negative. “We have received the test result of the samples and it is negative,” HC Gera, nodal officer of the UT, said this evening.

Panchkula remains soft target

It was a field day for the miscreants at Panchkula who, in addition to looting a bank, took a bag from a car parked in the same market of Sector 20. The windowpane of another car, apparently in an attempt to steal the bags lying inside the car, was found smashed. Fortunately, the bags lying in the cars contained nothing except some documents.

All eyes on counting centres

All is set for the counting of votes for the Chandigarh parliamentary seat tomorrow. According to officials sources, the election material, including EVMs, was brought back to the respective counting centres on the evening of May 13 after the polling. The EVMs have been stored in the strong room under double-lock system at the four counting centres.

HC sets May-22 deadline

Kalka is all set to be encroachment free by May 22. Taking up a petition, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today gave the shopkeepers time till May 17 to remove all the encroachments after which the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will step in.

Abandoned briefcase triggers panic

The recovery of a briefcase, which was found abandoned in Sector 23, triggered panic in the area as the police equipped with bomb disposal and dog squads reached the scene.

Six shops gutted in Sector 22
Chandigarh, May 15
Six shops were gutted in a fire that broke out at Sector-22 Bajwara Market here in the wee hours of today. According to fire department officials, they received information at about 5:40 am. Six fire tenders were pressed into service and the fire was brought under control after toiling hard for 17 minutes.

CBSE to act against violators
Chandigarh, May 15
The Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, will soon take stringent action against those private schools of Chandigarh, which are flouting the admission by-laws by giving provisional admission to students in Class XI. The authorities are planning to conduct surprise visits to various schools to check the authenticity of the reports that whether they are conducting classes of Class XI.

‘Umang’ concludes at Delhi Public School

Umang, a three-day cultural festival, concluded at Delhi Public School, Chandigarh, today. The event, which began on May 12, saw more than 500 students of the primary wing participating in several stage shows, including folk dance, western dance, patriotic song and advertisement jingles. Experts gave away prizes to the winners.

One dies of diarrhoea at Ambala
Ambala, May 15
A suspected diarrhoea patient died in Civil Hospital, Ambala Cantonment, while around ten others have been admitted to the hospital with the same ailment. The patients, who are said to be in stable condition, were admitted last evening. The district administration, however, stated that there was no reason to panic and due to the onset of summer these could be a few stray cases. Preventive measures have, however, been initiated.

State ‘indifferent’ to accident victims

Due to the indifferent attitude of the state government, the victims of the Mallah road accident have been deprived of any compensation even after one month of the accident.

312 examined at medical camp

A total of 312 patients were examined at a free medical camp organised by Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital at its Rajpura Urban Health Centre today.

3 cops hurt in accident
Dera Bassi, May 15
Three policemen were injured when a canter rammed into a truck from behind near the Ghaggar bridge here today. The injured were identified as head constable Tejinder Singh, Dyal Singh and home guard Krishan Lal. They were travelling along with other policemen to Patiala in the canter.

7 more booked in Sirhind clash case

Dowry: Husband, in-laws booked

The police has booked a Sector 52 resident, Munish Garcha, allegedly for demanding more dowry from his wife. The police has also booked in-laws of the woman in the case.

Woman commits suicide
Zirakpur, May 15
A 34-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide after hanging herself with a ceiling fan at her residence in Zirakpur this morning.

Trials for Fatehgarh Sahib cricket team
Chandigarh, May 15
The Fatehgarh Sahib Cricket Association, affiliated with the Punjab Cricket Association, will conduct trials to select under-19 probables on May 18 at 3 pm at Saffron City School, Fatehgarh Sahib, according to FSCA secretary Sanjeev Aggarwal.
