Patna, June 14
The role played by the district administration of Sonepat (Haryana) in providing succour to the flood ravaged people of Kosi belt in Bihar would certainly make the Haryana government proud. At the same time, it has set a novel example of inter-state cooperation to tide over a national calamity.

The Bihar officials are all praise for the District Magistrate of Sonepat, Ajit Joshi, who not only responded to the Bihar government’s appeal for help to aid the flood victims in right earnest but also played an instrumental role in raising donations to the tune of Rs 1.47 crore through voluntary agencies for carrying out the rehabilitation work in Bihar.

Joshi’s appeal to the people of Sonepat to skip one-time meal to contribute for the Bihar flood-relief fund seems to have touched the people and they contributed generously for the purpose. The donations from Sonepat were used for constructing 223 new houses for those who were rendered roofless by the floods last year in Shahpur-Musahari village under Saharsa district. Besides, infrastructure facilities in the village like roads, a community hall, solar lights and also 13 public toilets were created.

A gateway has also been constructed at the entrance of the village, which is named “Sonapat-Saharsa Maitri Dwaar” (A door for the friendship of Sonepat and Saharsa) as a symbol of friendship and cooperation between the two states.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda is scheduled to visit the village developed by Sonepat district administration tomorrow. He will be accompanied by the DM, Ajit Joshi. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will join his Haryana counterpart in Patna and together they will fly to Shahpur-Musahari village (250 km away from Patna) for the joint inauguration.

Perhaps, this act of inter-state cooperation to tide over a crisis would be an eye opener for those fanning sub-regional feelings for petty political gains, said a senior bureaucrat who had coordinated with the Haryana officials for this project.
